Goats for Jewish Uganda

Donation protected
How about some good news?
Our Jewish friends in Uganda have begun purchasing their dairy goats thanks to Jacob Souza and his Bar Mitzvah project:
"Goats for Jewish Uganda." The Abayudaya people have suffered persecution and severe drought recently. I am so glad we are able to help them become more self-sustaining. Here are some pictures of the youth in their community who are in charge of caring for the new goats. Thank you to all who supported this project. Special thanks to Deena and Jacob Souza!
Shabbat Shalom

Shalom Shalom!
“The Lord is My Shepherd” are the opening words of King David's most famous psalm. Abraham and Sarah, Moses, and King David were all shepherds of goats and sheep.  Today Jews still bring awareness of God into our lives by blowing the shofar (ram's horn) on Rosh Hashanah, wearing woolen tallit (prayer shawls made of their hair), scribing the Torah on their skin (parchment), performing kosher slaughter, and keeping their milk and meat separated.

The Abayudaya (ah-bah-yoo-DAH-yah) are the Jewish people of Uganda. They are subsistance farmers who depend on dairy goats for their basic needs. After many years of persecution and severe drought, they are building their herd and rebuilding their community.  Our goal is to raise enough funds for each family to get a male and female goat so they can be fruitful and multiply. The great sage Maimonides taught that the highest level of tzedaka (righteous giving) is to help someone build a livelihood that will sustain them in the future. You can do this great mitzvah by sponsoring a goat today!

Shalom Alechem,
I am Rabbi Aaron Philmus of Torat Yisrael in East Greenwich, RI. I recently began raising dairy goats for food and educational purposes.  Our Bar/Bat Mitzvah students are learning leadership skills and Jewish values through shepherding. We have also been skyping with the rabbi and Bar mitzvah students in Uganda.  They recently taught us over Skype how to sing their version of Am Yisrael Chai (Israel's People Live) Click to watch and listen!
Our students become even more proud to be Jewish as they help their fellow shepherds of Israel who are in need.  You can sponsor a goat today and give the highest level of tzedaka by investing in a sustainable future for the Abayudaya people. Thank you!

Shalom.  My name is Jacob Souza and am 13 years old. This year is my Bar Mitzvah and my Torah reading was about Noah, the animals, and the flood. My rabbi is friends with the leadership of the Jewish people in Uganda.  For my mitzvah project I helped him start "Goats for Jewish Uganda." I am donating a portion of my Bar Mitzvah gift money to support the cause.
I hope you will help sponsor a goat. Every donation will make a difference. Thank you!
