When asked how long they would remain nurse practitioners at clinics in Durant and Lexington, Mississippi Sisters Paula Merrill and Margaret Held responded “Forever, or as long as the Lord wills it.”
Sadly, they did not have forever. Sister Paula Merrill and Sister Margaret Held were brutally murdered in their home on the night of August 25th. Their considerable part in helping the sick and needy came to an end. But that does not mean that their work must end as well.
Their loss has left a void: of expertise, of manpower, of a willingness to help regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. Dr. Elias Abboud, head of the clinics, can continue the work of the Sisters. But he cannot do so alone. The work cannot continue without help.
Did You Know:
· Holmes County, where the clinics are located, is the 7th poorest county in America?
· 55% of children in Holmes County live below the poverty level?
· 44% of people in Holmes County live below the poverty level?
· The leading cause of death in Holmes County is heart disease, followed by cancer?
· There is a critical shortage of health care professionals and primary care providers in Holmes County?
This is the state of health care, and the ability of people to pay for care, in Holmes County. It is the situation the Sisters worked to combat for thirteen years, offering help in any way they could, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay for medical services. That is what is on the line in the wake of their deaths: a professional level of health care, often given at no cost, in one of the most impoverished counties in America.
Your donation will be used to provide:
· Medications
· Vaccinations
· Examinations
· Medical Tests
In the face of evil please donate and help continue the sisters' works of love.
Let love prevail!
