Hi,

My name's Gemma, and I'm deaf.

Because hearing problems run in my family, I've been tested for deafness since birth- tests stopped in my teens as everything appeared to be ok.

However, when I hit my thirties, it became harder to hear; people's speech became muffled, and I missed the end of words. Soon others noticed that my TV and radio volumes were cranked right up. So I visited the doctor, who quickly referred me to the hospital for tests.

They discovered I suffer from sensorineural hearing loss; the hair cells in my cochlea are gradually deteriorating, which causes difficulty receiving sound... these hairs cannot be regrown or repaired, so there's no cure.

Each year I am tested, and for the past three years, my hearing has decreased. Doctors are unable to determine if my hearing will continue to deteriorate, or if it could stabilise. With this in mind, I'm eager to find a way to ensure I'll always be able to communicate.

This is why I want to learn BSL (British Sign Language).

Not only will it help me remain connected with the world, it could also allow me to assist others to communicate, by studying to become a sign language interpreter.

This is where I need your help.

To be able to study up to BSL Level 4, I need to find £3,877.

Level 1: £315
Level 2: £539
Level 3: £1,128
Level 4: £1,895

To help me get me started, I am looking to raise £2000. The remainder I intend to raise by taking on extra work, and selling off my small collection of vintage clothing.

Level 1 starts in September 2016.

Please support me to sign... by donating and sharing.

I cannot thank you enough for your help - your support will help me hear and be heard.

With deepest thanks.
