Montera Middle School Cheerleaders

About Us:  Montera Cheerleaders are the first middle school cheerleaders in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). Through transformational coaching we strive to create a “whole athlete.”  We focus on positive behavior, teamwork, engagement and work ethic, as well as technique and skills, and having fun. As a flagship program, we hope to be a model for other middle schools within OUSD.
Statistics for our team:
•3.1 GPA average
•60% low income
•88% people of color
•100% of coaching staff is volunteer
•2 hrs of mandatory weekly study hall
•Located in the Montclair Hills of Oakland, Montera Middle school is the largest 6-8th grade comprehensive school in Oakland. It has a minority enrollment of 75% (state average is 42%), and 51% of it’s students qualify for free and reduced lunches.

History: One incoming 6th grade mom noticed interest from the students at Montera to start a cheer program, and bravely put together a team. More girls signed up for the Cheerleading try-outs (64!), than boys for the Flag football team. We have 28 cheerleaders on two teams; a varsity team and a junior varsity team.

Expectations:  The team has a rigorous practice schedule.  They practice 3 days a week, 2-4 hours each practice.  Academic accountability is a priority; team members are expected to maintain a 2.5 GPA, which is higher than the required OUSD athletic league requirement. The team is also held to a high standard of personal awareness and accountability, both on and off campus. The volunteer coaches and parents want to give the students a safe place where they can come together after school and engage in a social setting that is rooted in respect, where our athletes work together to learn skills, have fun, and discover the value of team and community work that will transcend well beyond middle school.

Support: As the first middle school cheer program in OUSD, our financial needs are high.  In order for this program to be successful, we need cheer uniforms and supplies. A majority of our girls have never traveled outside of the Bay Area — so supportive athletic shoes and uniforms are definitely out of reach. While the girls have actively fundraised both on and off the field, we still have a long way to go.

Our funding goal is to raise $20,000:
•Uniforms (basic top/skirt, hair bow, sweat suit, and bag) are $400/each (totaling $11,200),
•Shoes are $50/each (totaling $1,400),
•Varsity team building trip to perform in New Orleans $5000
•Team building trip for junior varsity $2500
By supporting OUSD’s flagship cheering program at Montera Middle School, you will be helping us set the standards for other middle schools in OUSD to follow.
