Human Rights and The Holocaust

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." -Mark Twain

My students and I will be traveling to Germany and The Netherlands with EF Tours in the summer of 2016 to study Human Rights and The Holocaust. Together, we will learn of dark history and how to fight for equality.

As a Teach for America educator in a Title I school, I was placed in a rural southern high school that is 40% Caucasian, 40% African American, and 20% Hispanic. Going into my second year of teaching, I have learned a lot about my students.

I know that each and every one of them are loving and thirsting for knowledge and travel. However, I have noticed that my students are sometimes afraid of other cultures and the unknown. Together, we have begun to explore social justice topics of inequality, topics of which have peaked their interest. As we prepare for our international trip on "Human Rights and The Holocaust" in the summer of 2016, I have loved to see their biases and inhibitions towards the world break down. As is the domino effect, I can also see their positive and welcoming attitude to those who are different from them being passed on to their friends. I cannot wait to see how the actual trip will effect them.

My Project
In preparation for our "Human Rights and The Holocaust" trip, I will be holding weekly workshops to educate my students on the Holocaust so that each one of them can better appreciate and deeply understand such an unfathomable disgrace in human history. Our topics for the monthly work shops include self identity, history of antisemitism, Hitler's rise to power, individual stories, resistance, missed opportunities, and current progress. Raising $6,000 will give each traveler, not including myself, $1,000 each towards the cost of their trip. Each trip costs $4,850 and includes all of the deatails, such as flights, hotels, sigtseeing, entrance fees, a student leadership conference, online learning platform, and a full time trilingual tour director. We need to pay for their travel by April, 1st 2016. Students have been working for over a year on fundraisers and monthly payments. An extra $1,000 towards each account would help tremendously!

Traveling the world has been my greatest teacher and deepest love. I strongly believe that when my students break out of their community and see the world on a larger scale full of different cultures, that each one of them will see that love is greater than hate, that humanity is our deepest connector. We will be eternally thankful for the additional support to send our students abroad. It literally will be life changing.
