WHAT IS 3 CHORDS?

Hi! My name is Anne, and I'm the creator of 3 Chords, an organization with a mission of helping refugee youth express themselves through music. Global displacement is at an all-time high, with over 65 million people fleeing their homes in 2015 due to conflict or persecution - that's 24 people a minute.

Distressingly, children make up over 50% of the world’s refugees, so in partnership with World Relief Nashville, 3 Chords works with high school aged refugees to teach them how to write original songs to tell their stories.

The name 3 Chords comes from a phrase songwriters often say - that the only thing you need to write a song is "three chords and the truth." I believe this truth can empower high school refugees new to America to realize that if they can simply learn three chords on guitar, that's all they need to be able to tell their story through music.

OUR MISSION

We believe that the process of writing original songs has the power to help refugee youth express themselves, process the events of their lives, and channel the emotions they feel; that the process of playing guitar and performing original music for others has the ability to help these young people share their stories with the Nashville community and broader world and to help natives develop more compassion and understanding for refugees new to America; that music has the power to heal; and finally, that it is our duty as human beings to encourage and build up one another, serve our neighbors, and love people without reserve. Music is simply our chosen avenue for doing these things.

Here's a breakdown of our anticipated costs:

$500 - CD production and manufacturing (250 qty)

Materials for Students
$300 - Musical instruments

If you aren't able to donate money or materials at this time, we would love to have you volunteer with us! Whether you're a songwriter, musician, or simply a human with a heart for serving these kids, you can volunteer with us. We're specifically looking for people to help teach songwriting and guitar classes, as well as to help record students' songs and find venues for them to perform. Click here to sign up to volunteer!
