It happened on Jan the 5th when my mom went to work & she had a tingling sensation in the right side of her face and then in her fingertips on her right arm so she called the hospital thinking it was a sign of stroke and they had her come in for diagnosis. The did x-rays, Ct scan & an MRI. After a week they had her go in again for another MRI, this time they injected her with a dye to light up whatever they were looking for. On Jan 23rd they wanted both my mom & dad to come in for consultations & that's when the neurologist showed them the results. There was a mass on her right lung & ten lesions in her brain. The doctor straightaway said that it was 99% chances cancer but they hadn't even had the biopsy done. After the biopsy they said that it wasn't cancer & that it was valley fever so they gave her anti seizure & anti fungal medicine's in heavy doses. The antifungal medicine made her very weak and sometimes she would have moments where she would zoned out staring straight through everything and not responding to anything for a couple of seconds to a minute so at that point my dad said for us to go to the ER. At the ER on 11th Feb they did another MRI & found some brain edema so she got admitted. Then we waited on a blood test from UC Davis which came back positive for cryptococcal meningitis which was confused for valley fever since they share the same symptoms. After a week she got worse so they decided to do lumbar punctures to release the pressure in her head at the same time check for Cryptococcal fungus in her spinal fluid which tested positive. For those who don't know what a lumbar puncture is it's the procedure of taking fluid from the spine in the lower back through a hollow needle, usually done for diagnostic purposes. So they treated her for cryptococcal by giving her new types of antifungal medicine. Also in order to void infection they gave her a pick line so they don't have to poke/inject her every time. She had lumbar punctures three days in a row to release pressure & on the third one the doctor suggested that she be transferred to their ICU neuro facility in Sacramento to get a EVD put on since she's exposed to bacterial infection every time they do a lumbar puncture. 20th Feb she was transferred 21st Feb a EVD was put on & the pressure & head aches went away. They treated the fungal infection about a month then they challenged her by shutting the valve to see if the pressure would build up & it did. The next option was to place a VP Shunt. The operation went well & a week later on 25th March my mom & dad got transferred back to Modesto Kaiser. She was doing great for about two weeks walking without a walker, trying very hard to get better so she can come home. On 13th April they did another lumbar puncture to check the fungus level in her spinal fluid, the very next day she developed a pain in her left leg. The pain got worse within days it got excruciating to where she couldn't walk & couldn't sleep at night. Then she started hallucinating due to the Norco pain medicines that they been giving her,It only got worse soon she started slurring her words and she wasn't able to recognize us anymore. After that her slurs just became noises. And they transfer her back to Sacramento. They placed another shunt in her lower back and started draining fluid to relieve pressure immediately. They where able to stabilize the pressure in her head but unfortunately they said there may be some brain damage and if so we had to prepare for goodbyes so now this is where we are.
