2017 Lafayette Scholarship Award
The Joseph and Barbara Lafayette Scholarship Award honors the memory of my parents, Joseph and Barbara Lafayette of Adams Run, South Carolina who were murdered on May 18, 1994. When this tragedy occured, my sister, brother, and I were all away serving in the Army, Navy, and Air Force respectively.
In 2002, I decided to honor their legacy of service to our community by offering a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior at Baptist Hill High School, an underserved school in the Charleston County South Carolina School District. So far, 20 students have benefitted from receiving $1,000 in scholarships and others have received smaller monetary awards.
This award has allowed us to cope with our loss over the years and give back to our community, which supported us as we served in the military. We've turned our tragedy into an opportunity for a young student to go to college. Any donation you make is greatly appreciated.
