The Fishers Junior High School We the People team took first place at the Indiana Middle School We the People meet on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. This victory was the culmination of months of hard work, dedication, and diligence on the part of the 24 students in this year's We the People class and their teacher, Mr. Mike Fassold.
With this win, the team has the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. to compete in the 6th Annual We the People National Invitational, May 3 through May 7.
The team is beyond excited about this next leg of their We the People journey. They've already jumped into the next phase of learning, planning, and practicing for the competition. Ask any of the teens, and they'll tell you exactly how many days they have left until competition. It is impossible to overstate the amount of time and effort these young people put in every day to learn about our constitution, the founding principles of our country, and how they can work to make it better.
We're asking our community, friends, and family for donations to help offset the competition and travel costs. We the People is an eighth grade class at Fishers Junior High. There are no extra school funds set aside for the team. Please know that every little bit will help the team's families.
The FJHS We the People team will travel with WorldStrides, the leader in education travel programs for students, by charter bus from Fishers to Washington, D.C. Along with doing their best to win this prestigious competition with three days of hearings, the team will tour our nation's capitol, seeing first hand the very documents, places, and monuments they have been learning about all year. To say Weoples are passionate about the constitution, our U.S. government, and it's rich history is a dramatic understatement!
The team has committed to attending the competition, having made the first deposit for their trip, but more deadlines are fast approaching. Our total goal of $30,000 would cover all students, our teachers, and support team. Only after all students and staff have been supported, will donations be used for incidentals leading up to and following the competition. This GoFundMe campaign will end March 28, 2019.
We’ll update regularly as payment deadlines approach. Our next payment date is January 12, 2019. We’d like to have met a third of our goal by then.
The teens on the team will be approaching local businesses for sponsorships. They will also be organizing fundraising events in the upcoming months to help meet this goal, but any amount you can donate will be greatly appreciated.
If you are a local business and would like to make a tax free donation, please contact us for the Tax ID number and the paperwork needed to make this donation.
We the People is a unique opportunity for students to engage with our American history in personal and meaningful ways. These young adults give back to our Hamilton County community in countless ways. Over 90% of the teens on the team are members of the National Junior Honor Society, volunteering at events across our area. The teens as a whole are active in sports, the arts, and their community. They are amazing individuals. They have worked so hard and come so far. Being a part of We the People has already enriched their lives immensely and going to the National Invitational would change them forever.
We invite you all to follow the team on their journey. We'll be posting testimonials from the teens and their parents here on GoFundMe, as well as on social media.
Follow the team on Twitter and Facebook for frequent updates.
Even if you are not in a position to make a monetary donation, sharing this GoFundMe with your own friends, family, and community will go a long way to helping the team!
