In December 2016, our 4.5 year old son, Adyn, was diagnosed with High Risk B-Cell ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). He was later bumped to Very High Risk B-Cell ALL which meant that he was at a very high risk of relapse. After a very rough 10 months with ridiculous amounts of chemotherapy treatment, Adyn hit the Maintenance part of his treatment and was in cruise control. He had 1 sick day all throughout Kindergarten... Only 1! And he played another season of soccer which he loved prior to diagnosis.
On Thursday, August 9th, 2018, Adyn was set to start Cycle 4 of Maintenance. Adyn had a lumbar puncture with intrathecal chemo done which was something he has had a countless number of times in the past 19 months. But, this time was like any other... Adyn’s spinal fluid showed Leukemia cells. Once again, I received the most devastating phone call from his oncologist the following day... Adyn had relapsed. We were blindsided! Adyn looked the healthiest he had looked in 19 months and we were half way through his 3ish years of treatment.
We were brought back into the hospital on Monday the 13th. Adyn had another lumbar puncture and a bone marrow aspiration to see if he had also relapsed in his bone marrow (which is where his Leukemia was at his original diagnosis). Sure enough, Adyn’s bone marrow also showed Leukemia cells. We were just absolutely devastated!
Because of the relapse in the spinal fluid and the amount of Leukemia found in his bone marrow... Adyn will need a bone marrow transplant.
Adyn’s sister, Abby, has been tested and she is a 9/10 match. Adyn’s transplant doctor at All Children’s Hospital has informed us that Abby will be his donor. Our daughter has been given the chance to save her brothers life! Is there anything more amazing?!?!
Adyn will finish his last block of treatment here locally at Golisano Children’s Hospital the end of November. On December 4th, Adyn will receive his first round of total body radiation at Florida Hospital in Tampa. After 3 days of radiation, Adyn will be admitted to All Children’s Hospital/St. Pete where we will begin the transplant journey. Adyn and I will be in St. Pete and away from home for 3-4 months.
Thank you for all the continued love and support for our warrior and family!!!
