Pictured above from last year is me in my happy place - a hiking trail deep in the San Gabriel mountains, only accessible by a 45 minute drive up long, winding mountain roads with no cell service. It's a remote location I visit to unwind and escape the chaos of the concrete jungle.
On 6/29/2017, I drove up to the trailhead with my boyfriend, Navid, packed some essentials, and hiked out to camp. On 6/30/17, we hiked back to my car to discover someone had broken my car window and stolen many of my personal belongings.
(1st photo: the broken window temporarily covered with clear tape. 2nd photo: the two tires which were punctured 4 times.)
(A photo taken on the road earlier this year, February 2017)
I have been living on the road since November 2015, and what I had in my car is a lot of what I had to my name. The pain didn't stop there. The thief went as far to slash two of my tires, leaving Navid and I stranded with no cell service on a hot, California day. Thankfully, the forest service was just passing through during patrol, and they called for help. Six incredibly stressful hours later, my car made it down the mountain and got new tires thanks to the help of family.
In the aftermath, car damages have totaled to $770. I have lost all of my art from the last eight years. Every piece of writing, every film project, every photograph-all important pieces to my life as a filmmaker and photographer. I have lost my laptop, multiple hard drives, various sketchbooks and journals. My wallet, a very sentimental gift from my father, and my ID and bank cards all need to be replaced now. All of this comes to more than a $2,000 loss. There are still tiny pieces of glass in my car- in my socks, shoes, blankets, books, and other items that were rained on when the thief smashed the window.
To date, I am still missing everything, including the window that was destroyed in the burglary. I still have to pay back what was lent to me for the tow service. These two debts total to $455, which is why I need your help.
The shock has not settled. I sit here wondering if the thief has noticed my toothbrush in the bag he stole, or my personal journal in the front pocket of my backpack. If he's noticed the multiple binders of scripts and original writings and if he bothered to give a second thought before dumping all the not-profitable, stolen items. I wonder why the sheriff's department shrugged at the fact that no one would be assigned to my case until next week. Why the forest department told me I should have checked if the wilderness area I was visiting had a record for criminal activity. Why this had to happen, out of all places, in my happy place.
