The Back Story...
I first heard about Tytoo Gardens at a Sauble Christian Fellowship church service back in about 2006. Our church had sent a team to the Mission of Hope an orphanage operated in Haiti. The team while down in Haiti, met a Canadian Man, who operated a small orphanage a few miles from where our group was staying. Ed Hughes had gone to Haiti to start a new life and bought some land with the intension of opening a nightclub and beach resort on the coast about thirty miles from Port au Prince in the little town of Simonette, Quest, Haiti. While doing construction on his nightclub he kept meeting local children interested in what he was doing and hungry and looking for something to eat.
Marie Carmen was one of those first kids. Ed’s. interest in the nightclub soon was replaced with his love for caring for these children.(obviously a much bigger story) His little orphanage, Tytoo Gardens (named after his sail boat) soon was up to 25 or so kids and he was trying to provide for them and get them an education at the Mission of Hope where he met our team from SCF.
Sauble Christian soon had taken a keen interest in Ed’s orphanage and a number of our people took over the support of individual children at the orphanage. Marg and I wondered if we should get involved and found out that the two oldest gals at the orphanage were without sponsors so we took on the sponsorship of Mary Carman and Madeline.
For the last ten years we have sent support to Tytoo Gardens to feed and educate these two gals. They both have now graduated high school and grown into lovely women. Madeline has managed to get herself to Miami, Florida with her daughter and is starting a life there. Mary Carmen has just graduated as a nurse and is starting her life as the nurse at the school in Simonette and the health clinic run by Tytoo Gardens serving the area of Simonette.
This leads me to the purpose of this message. In Haitian culture people do not get married unless they are financially able to support themselves and they have a home to live in. Marg and I want to see Mary Carmen able to be an example of success for the Tytoo Garden Orphanage. I was on a team to Haiti in 2014 and got to meet Mary Carmen and see her at work giving back to her community She is a wonderful human being. In talking with her I asked her about “Mr Right” and he does exist but the house is a major issue for them.
We want to build a house for Mary Carmen, on land in Simonette and allow her to prosper and become an example to others coming along behind her.
To build a Haitian home will cost about 5000 American To accomplish this Marg and I are asking for your support. During the Wiarton Wednesdays of December we are going to donate 30 percent of the day’s sales to the Mary Carmen Building Fund. We are also going to use Fund Me on Facebook for those interested in helping who are not able to be with us on Wiarton Wednesdays in December. If we were blessed enough to surpass the needs the balance will still go to Tytoo for future builds.
We will be updating you as the month progresses and charting the success of the project. Please come and join us in a real “feel good Christmas project”.
