Norfolk Southern 375 Caboose Fund
The Fuquay - Varina Museums acquired an original 1940 Norfolk Southern Railway caboose for the history museum in Feburary 2015. We found it on Ozark Mountian railcar who was disposing it for the Hackney family of Cedar Bluff Alabama. We had it moved from Alabama to North Carolina in July 2015. We have to completely restore it inside and out. After removing some of the wood walls inside, we found asbestos in walls & ceiling. So after weeks of calls, testing & bids we have found a company to remove it. Then we can get started restoring it inside & out. The previous owners stripped it to make a lake cabin. We have to do major repairs, welding, new steps, new windows, complete inside rebuild with tongue & groove boards , yellow pine hardwood floors. Then sand blast inside & outside and paint with heavy duty enamel paint. The finished caboose will be a major part of the history museum. This caboose was built in 1940 by Magor car corp in NY for the original Norfolk Southern Railway that served the town of Fuquay Varina NC. There were 12 cabooses built for the NS numbers 365-376. About half exist today rest were scrapped. This caboose is historic to the town as it passed through the town on freight trains for 40+ years. I am Tim Carroll life long resident of FV, member of the museum, member of the Norfolk & Southern historical society and chairman of this project.
