Help Myles Graduate in 2014!!!

It takes a village to raise a child.

It was a small lesson my parents taught me, and only one of the many that I've only begun to appreciate as I've grown into young adulthood, but it's use seems invaluable to me now. My mother, through her years of experience in education, her drive, and her passion to instill excellence in youth, especially black youth, has helped me to this point.

If you're reading this letter, then at some point in the last 21 years, you became part of this village that has helped raise me. Whether it was through Pingry, Trinity, NGVF, CTY, family, friends, my church family at Galilee, or just someone I've met in my travels, I have you all to thank for the growth that I've experienced throughout my collegiate career, and the gratitude and humility I feel is overwhelming. However, I have both something to share, and something to ask of you.

As many of you know, I am a Studio Arts Major at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. The focus of my Major is in Cartooning and Illustration, but the love and passion I have for drawing is much deeper than a job, or a career. It is truly what I love to do. What's more, the progress I've made in the last year has allowed me to move forward with a project that's been in the making for over five years. And this is where I need your help.

Nothing in life is free, and college is certainly no exception. Up until now, I've been able to pay for my college education through scholarships and loans. However, this year I was unable to receive enough financial aid to pay for the entirety of my tuition and room and board. I've been working three part time jobs in addition to attending Trinity as a full-time student, but I do not make enough to pay the full amount.

As the holidays approach, I ask you to consider contributing to my fundraising efforts, not as a random donation, but as an investment in the continued academic and artistic successes of a young man trying to finish his college career. The money that you give, no matter how large or how small, will not be wasted.
The funds that you provide will help me pay for tuition, room and board for the remainder of the academic year, as well as supply costs to complete my senior thesis, an original graphic novel titled "Views From The Top".

Views From The Top takes contemporary issues of social and cultural identity, such as race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, ability, and nationality, and projects them through the lens of a group of young adults dealing with the experiences caused by their acceptance or refusal of those identities. Views also links current events with fiction by investigating the fallout of events such as the unrest in Egypt, the shooting death of Trayvon Martin as well as the subsequent trial and media coverage, and the recent passing of the great Nelson Mandela. It is not just about telling a story or drawing pictures, Views From the Top is about telling our stories, such that the next generation of Black dreamers, artists, entrepreneurs, dancers, musicians, and visionaries can see that not only are they capable, but when they ask for help, they are able to accomplish infinitely more than they can imagine. With your help, I'll be able to do that.
