Injured Puppy Needs Your Help!!

FFAR Latrobe cannot save the animals we do without your help!! We rely on the donations of our amazing supporters to save animals like Kurt. Any donation big or small will go directly towards paying Kurts extensive vet bill. Kurt is an 18 week old Great Dane x who came to FFAR Latrobe 9 weeks ago. He was petrified of people, underweight, full of worms and had an old injury to his front leg making him unable to walk properly. Due to him being unable to place the paw normally, he had worn all the skin off the end of his toes, almost to the bone! Kurt was taken straight to Latrobe Veterinary Hospital to be assessed. His xrays came back with no obvious fractures or bone deformities, though the leg is obviously shorter than the other, so Kurt underwent a neurological exam which revealed a lack of feeling in his paw. At this point it appears that he has injured the nerves in his shoulder, brachial plexus, which is most likely caused from him hanging from the leg. This would also also explain the extensive scarring around his paw. Given we don’t know what caused the I damage to the leg or how long it’s been this way. Our Treatment option at that point was amputation of the leg or treat conservatively and hope for the best. Given that Kurt is a large breed dog, we opted to treat conservatively and see how things went in the hope of saving the limb. Kurt received physiotherapy twice daily, laser therapy once daily, electrotherapy, acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. After the first 3 weeks his wound had healed, he had feeling back in his toes and there was a noticeable improvement in the ability to straighten his leg. Kurt has a long way to go before being able to find his forever home, though given the improvement so far, we are still hoping to be able to save his leg. Kurt’s treatment is an ongoing expense that is starting to add up. Xrays, daily bandage changes, premium food, chiropractic treatments and the list goes on. Depending on Kurt’s progress over the next few weeks will also determine if he requires a CT scan to assess for further damage, and at this point we don’t know if surgery will be required in the future. We are committed to Kurt and getting him the best possible treatment. We can only imagine the constant pain and neglect he has received prior to coming into our care and we will do everything we can to make sure he has the love and care that he deserves. This is where we need your help!! Any donation big or small will go directly towards helping us pay for Kurts ongoing vet treatment.
