36 Families Face Homelessness In WA

We are asking for such a great amount because the average moving costs are between $3500-$4300. Moving costs meaning first and last months rent plus deposit. Fox Cove Apartments was the last low income apartments here in Burien. Moving truck rentals, boxes, application fees, and taking time off work all cost money that most of us don’t have. We figured that $4,000 would be an acceptable amount for all us to be able too afford too move in such short notice.

36 low income families located in the city of Burien, Wa are being forced out of their apartments by new ownership. Under previous ownership, residents have had too live with high crime, building maintenance issues, and even major pest problems. Some apartments have been deemed “unlivable”. Two residents even live in their apartments without any major kitchen appliances such as a stove or a refrigerator. In the beginning of September 2018 the previous owner, Dean Caldwell sold FOX COVE APARTMENTS in Burien, Wa. He was paid a whopping amount of $5,000,000.00. On September 14, 2018 all 36 units were left with notices on their doors introducing the new owners. The residents of Fox Cove Apartments were just now notified of the property being sold and under new management by SUHRCO Residential Properties LLC of Bellevue, Wa.

After 48 hours, units 1-6 were given a 20 day notice to vacate by October 31st, 2018. Then all section 8 residents were given a 60 day notice to vacate by November 31st, 2018. After receiving these notices, one of the residents in units 1-6 decided to contact the property manager for questions. Property management replied and said rent will be $1,800 which is 2x the rent now and then the complexes will be fully renovated. He asked if him and his roommate will be moving back in and SUHRCO Residential Properties LLC said they will not be releasing to anyone at Fox Cove Apartments. After this conversation, the manager has been on “vacation” ever since.

All the families at Fox Cove Apartments are facing extreme homelessness. The weather is getting much colder and it snows here in Wa State. Most of the children that live here are under the age of 10. And what about the elderly and disabled? No one has the means to move. Thanksgiving and Christmas is just around the corner.

Friday night September 28th, one resident decided to rant on a local Facebook page called We Recommend Burien. Not thinking anything serious could come from it the post goes viral. That following night a news anchor Deedee Sun from Seattle KIRO7 Channel 7 News contacts her and sets up a camera interview . Upon her arrival more than a dozen residents come out their homes too speak with the Channel 7 News anchor. 11pm that night the story airs and became top news in the area. Earlier this year another apartment complex called Tiki Apartments in Tacoma,Wa went through a very similar situation that got the community involved. The residents of Fox Cove Apartments are hoping for a similar outcome.

The community organized a Meet&Greet Tenants meeting with City Council Members and an Education Coordinator with the Tenants Union of Wa State that following Sunday evening. Everyone vented and got things off there chests. CM Krystal Marx and City Manager Brian J. Wilson advised everyone to attend the City Council Meeting on October 1st 2018. (Updates coming soon)

Like CM Krystal Marx said “Even though all this is completely legal it doesn’t make it right.”
