The Old Spanish Trail Silhouettes
Donation protected
Being one of four National Historical Trails administered by the National Park Service, crossing the state of Utah, The Old Spanish Trail, designated in 2002, is probably the most understated. The 2700 mile OST was a major conduit of trade between Santa Fe, Mexico and California, from about 1827 until the mid1850s.
With three major routes west, two converged here in Moab. The crossing of the Colorado River here was the only option for hundreds of miles north or south. The southern route, through what is now Arizona and New Mexico, was arduous and dangerous making the trek north a good chose. At this time Moab has no recognition or acknowledgment of The OST. With hundreds of thousands visitors coming to and through Moab each year I believe The OST silhouettes would bring the significance of the OST to Moab and give visitors an awareness of it historical and cultural importance.
