Soccer Injury--12 y/o Broken Kneecap

Donation protected
Robert's parents FINALLY let him play club soccer in 7th grade. During the second practice of the new season Robert landed awkwardly during an agility drill and suffered a hyperflexion fracture of the patella. His new coach took one look where Robert's kneecap should have been and called 9-1-1.Robert is active and has had experience with broken bones over the years, but this was different. Not only was this his first ride in an ambulance, but the broken bone was severely dislocated.
He had a team of competent and kind medical professionals who worked hard to keep him comfortable while doctors determined how to repair the broken bone and surrounding tissue.
As you can see from the x-ray, the quadricep muscle yanked the top piece of his kneecap several inches above the knee. Through the night until surgery the following morning, his quad muscle continued to spasm. His ER doctor explained that the largest muscle in his body was simply trying to "fix" it. The spasms of such a big muscle exacerbated an already painful break.

Robert was in a lot of pain. So, it was wonderful news that the surgery was successful. His surgeon was able to reconnect the two parts of his kneecap by drilling four holes in each and cinching them together with sutures in much the same way a post-tensioned bridge is pulled together. The not-so-wonderful reality of a summer of recovery, rehabilitation, and a second surgery to remove those thick, bone-deep sutures set in. Robert was devastated that his long-awaited club soccer season was over and his summer plans of hiking, biking and swimming were ruined.
Robert's had moments of frustration: stretching out scar tissue and learning to walk again after so many weeks of immobility take real courage! He's worked so hard with his physical therapist to regain lost muscle.
Our family was blessed to be able to adopt Robert when he was a newborn. He is funny, smart, and thoughtful. Robert is a caring big brother to his younger brother and sisters.
Robert's injury was an uncommon one, but luckily it should not end his soccer career. He's been playing soccer since the first grade and hopes it won't take the full year of recovery to get back on the field. He's planning to be his team's go-to striker! Any help you can give toward remaining ambulance, hospital, and physical therapy costs after our family insurance and the soccer league's insurance coverage is greatly appreciated. Thanks for caring!
