Fire Sparks Urgency to Rebuild
Donation protected
The Chief Joseph Band of Nez Perce is seeking financial donations to assist with rebuilding the Nez Perce Longhouse on the Colville Indian Reservation in central Washington State. The Chief Joseph Band of Nez Perce is a constituent member of the Federally Recognized Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation.
The Nez Perce Longhouse was consumed by fire December 26, 2012; the Colville Tribal Community suffered a tragic loss. The longhouse was a vitally important gathering place serving numerous purposes for our community: celebrations; mourning; memorials; first-food ceremonies; Indian New Year; a place to learn the teachings of our people and to bring our youth, adults, and elders together; prayers; community activities; Colville Tribal training and meetings; and cultural and language preservation. Our Tribal Community needs and wants the Nez Perce Longhouse rebuilt to ensure the perpetuation of Nez Perce teachings for our future generations.
In order to realize our vision of a new Nez Perce Longhouse, the Nez Perce Longhouse (NPLH) Rebuilding Committee was organized. Our efforts are supported by the Colville Tribal Business Council. In addition to our insurance compensation, the NPLH Rebuilding Committee has held local fundraisers; is increasing regional awareness of our needs; is applying for grants and donations; creating a brochure for public distribution; and, developing a webpage.
If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact the Nez Perce Longhouse Committee. We appreciate your time and consideration and look forward to developing a relationship with the larger Community as the vision of our Nez Perce Longhouse is realized.
