We've seen it on the news: starving kids with outstretched hands, grabbing pieces of bread, cramming into overstuffed mouths, while ballooning stomachs tell of little such nourishment in recent months or years.
It moves our sympathies – as it should – but because of the drastic nature of these images, we fail to notice those in our midst who – though not starving – are struggling.
Do we notice:
The young mom, abandoned by husband and family, struggling to raise two kids. Wheat cereal every breakfast, PB&J every lunch, Ramen every dinner… day in, day out.
The older couple on Social Security, using their limited allowance to keep a roof over their head, and settling for oatmeal every breakfast, soup for lunch and supper… day in, day out.
The middle-aged veteran, haunted by images from overseas, unable to hold down a job – for now. Beans and rice. Morning, noon, and night. Day in, day out.
They deserve better.
Just because they are down and out for a few months or years doesn’t mean they are inferior to the rest of society. That somehow less in their bank accounts means they have to settle for less in their stomachs or less variety to choose from.
Cows and horses eat the same old thing… day in, day out.
People shouldn’t have to.
That’s why I am seeking to raise money for the Albion, WA food bank. In a community with 600 residents, 38 families or individuals need the little boost they get from there once a month.
Yes, they have lots of beans and rice and wheat cereal to choose from… and a nearby organization donates some fresh fruit and veggies…
But, there is precious little there in the dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese) or meat (tuna, chicken, beef) or boxed/frozen meals (casserole, pizza, stew) or snack departments.
As my dad always said, "Variety is the spice of life."
Food drives are nice, but they also limit what can be given. Yogurt and fresh chicken drumsticks can’t sit around a long time. They have to be bought right before they are given away.
Thus, this fund.
My goal is to raise enough money to fill in the gaps in the Albion food bank pyramid for the rest of this year. I estimate the average to be about $300 a month or $3000 for the rest of this year.
Every little bit helps. Give what you can, and spread the word to others. God bless!
