Safe Ride Home from Hospital after Sexual Assualt
Donation protected
Hello everyone,
I am licensed Victims Advocate for Wyckoff Hospital in Brooklyn, NY This is a volunteer position. I am writing this because I am tired of having to send people home at anytime day or night from the hospital after just having been treated for sexual assault often alone via public transportation or even walking. As I am sure that you can imagine this must be frightening and traumatic for the victim/survivors. I am not willing to take public transportation from the hospital at 2am. I call and pay for myself car service. I have asked if there’s a budget for this sort of thing in the overall program budget and I have been told no. I want this to change and have reached out to a couple of our public officials. In the meantime, I wanted to find out if there was enough interest in the community to support this project and have set up this GoFundMe page for this purpose. Whatever money that would be raised would go directly to Wyckoff Hospital VITP (Violence Intervention and Treatment Program) earmarked for transportation of Victim/Survivors and volunteer Victims Advocates.
I am local person who lives in the community who wanted to make a change as to how Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault were treated. That’s why I volunteer my time and why I am doing this. Sending anyone home from the hospital after having been treated for sexual assault without knowing that they have a safe way to get there is simply wrong. Expecting volunteers Victims Advocates to get to the hospital within 30 minutes via public transportation is unrealistic and the expecting them to pay for the costs of getting there and home safely is wrong and needs to change.
Ideas and questions welcomed! I hope that you will help to support this project. I have reached out to our local political offices to help find a more permanent solution.
Regards,
Deborah Spiroff
