Global Leadership Adventures

I have just discovered a wonderful opportunity for an overseas experience that is bound to change my life. Global Leadership Adventures (GLA), an international education organization, offers unique programs that send high school students to countries around the world such as Coast Rica, Bali, Spain and India. GLA’s mission is to operate programs around the world, which offer educational, services and leadership opportunities for young people in order to foster leadership development and global citizenship.

With my interests in marine conservation and photography I am excited to meet the international staff and students, volunteer with local communities and explore the history and culture of Costa Rica and Peru while developing my leadership potential.

GLA is a recognized leader in its field sending hundreds of high school students overseas every year. All Global Leadership Adventures programs are run solely by student contributions, and therefore each program has a fee. I have found two programs in which I believe I would greatly benefit from. The fee for the trip in Costa Rica including all meals, lodging, travel, medical insurance, and in country transportation, totals $2,099 and does not include airfare to Costa Rica. The program in Peru totals $5,499 without airfare to Peru.

GLA offers a unique opportunity for high school students to travel the world and use their skills and knowledge to make a difference. I chose these two programs because they both mean a lot to me. To help you understand what I will be doing with my time out of the country I’ll tell you a little of what is on the itinerary for Costa Rica. The goal of the trip it to help rescue sea turtles and clean up beaches. For a week over spring break we will be protecting a sea turtle nesting ground, helping out on night patrols watching for poachers and practicing speaking Spanish in local markets working on our bargaining skills.  We will also be spending our free time zip lining through the rain forests and learning about marine life on a boat in the mangroves.

The program in Peru is a little different. It is a 21 day flagship program centered around photojournalism. This program captures the lives of the Andean people. We get to be completely immersed in the Peruvian culture, documenting their everyday lives, learning history and improving our photography skills at the same time. We get to work one on one with photographers and journalists in their works shops. We will spend a day hiking the historic Incan ruin sight Machu Picchu.  With Peru being a Spanish speaking country as well I will also get more opportunities to practice my Spanish.

These unique opportunities would be life changing experiences. I will be able to use my knowledge and leadership skills to not only help people and animals, but to improve my own skills as well. To be able to go on these trips I need financial aid I am hoping that you can help! Every single dollar gets me closer to my goal!
