Parkway Montessori Middle School is the first public, urban Montessori middle school in the state of Minnesota. Our school opened in 2013 and we continue to grow and develop our Montessori community. We are located on the East Side of St. Paul in a historically diverse and low income community. 77% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Within the past three years we have found it challenging to gather funds for field trips. However, when we are able to bring our students on outings the positive impact is immediate and significant.
Parkway Montessori Middle School is focused on educating the whole child and immersing our children in the natural world. We are raising funds so that ALL our 6th grade students are able to fully participate in a three day field study at the Audubon Center in Sandstone, MN in March 2017. This field trip experience would offer our urban students a unique opportunity to discover the world outside of the city.
The field study will include a variety of courses from the Audubon Center, such as the Ojibwe Hike, Maple Syruping, Voyageurs and Fur Trade, as well as offering our students the opportunity to develop and strengthen their commitment to our core values (peace, community, learning, hard work, respect, and service). As part of this experience, we would like our students and staff to focus on stewardship, community building, and reflection.
Maria Montessori said, “Scientific observation then has established that education is not what the teacher gives; education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment.” Our philosophy of education strives to embody this principle, providing our students the opportunity to drive their own learning and explore the world around them.
