Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a
man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime
I was a Canadian United Nations Peace Keeper in 1994 and have witnessed the horrible events . Since this time I have followed Rwanda with fascination. There are very few countries in history that have come so far in trying to put the past behind them. Much work is still to be done to assist the poor and educate the masses. While I was in Rwanda I volunteered at the Jam Orphanage in Butre where we help repair building and ensure a safe water supply. I have a picture of orphans with me which I proudly display at home. In 2012 I decided to do research on Rwanda and found an Individual who was at the orphanage. I contacted Justin Sunday Nzitatira and began e-mailing with him. After two years I sent my picture of the orphanage and found out he was in that picture. It proves we live in a small world and that God always has a plan.
Sunday has devoted his life to helping others and has been very active in setting up charities and helping his fellow Rwandans. The newest project is the Kimironko Women's Empowerment Center which will teach women to sew and create beautiful clothes and other items. I see the Rwandans as extremely proud and loving people who want to better themselves and they are willing to work extremely hard. One goal of the Center is to provide seamstress training which requires sewing machines and material. I am requesting donations to buy the sewing machines and materials required. Each group of women graduates are able to provide for their families and break the cycle of poverty. With income the women are able to send their children to school to receive an education. Your donation will go a long way to help Rwandans for generations to come. Please help me get this vital project going. The sewing machines are about $100.00 USD each and will train many women. We appreciate any help.
Kimironko Women's Empowerment
TO promote and empower women through capacity development and self-reliance.
Kimironko is a beautiful community situated in the green hills of Rwanda.
There are families, mostly women and children who live with limited resources. Families depend on agriculture but access to water and sanitation is low. In this community, there are not many ways that the women can generate income.
We have spent time with the people in this village and have found them to be joyful and hospitable. Together with the community leaders, they are asking for help to set up a work program for the women that could earn them some income.
We are asking for your help to translate their wishes to reality.
Our Plan
Establish a sewing training program for the women in the Community. This will allow them to learn a new skill through which they can earn an income and form a community co-operative. This initiative will provide a course in sewing skills for women to prepare them for factory work or for setting up their own tailoring businesses. The project will use industrial and domestic equipment and will be led by trainers with outside assistance and from other tailoring experts. Each group of 10-12 students will come in 3 days a week to learn and practice skills for a period of 3-6 months
What we need
Funds to purchase the sewing machines, fabrics and other essentials for training. Small financial incentives for the women during the course of the training.
What the Community provides
we established a partnership a Non-Governmental Organization Bridge of Hope (www.itemeryibyiringiro.org) in Kigali which will provide a location open for the training within the village. There are several trained women who can serve as teachers during the start up. We will also volunteer our time to coordinate the activities.
Sustainability plan
In order to make this initiative sustainable, at the end of each training cycle, the students will serve as trainers for the next cohort. In this way they will continue to practice and at the same time pay back into the project. This will also allow the women to support each other. In addition to this, the students who will successfully graduate will be awarded a sewing machine of their own, so to enable them to start their own sewing business.
The project outcome
Our goal for the first year is to train 40 women.
They are counting on us to start this life-changing project.
This effort will change many lives in the Kimironko community.
It's really this simple.
