Summary of a history of struggle for life

Our friend, Vanessa Flamini, 28 years old, married and mother of a 6-year-old daughter, has gone through difficult moments these days. On Tuesday, July 11, 2017 around 3 pm, Vanessa was at home with her daughter when she suddenly began to feel strong chest pains. Her daughter Julia immediately called her father asking for help. He was working far from Toronto at that moment, so he called two of her friends who were nearby who went immediately to her house to rescue his wife.

When they got there, they found her on the floor, writhing with a lot of pain, numbness in the arms and difficult breathing, when they saw her in that condition, they soon called the paramedics who came to the aid promptly. After 40 minutes of rescuing service at her place, they took her to the nearest hospital (Humber River Hospital), where she stayed for more than 4 hours doing a lot of tests and controlling her vital signs (blood pressure and heart rate). After many tests and clinical analysis, the doctors found out that Vanessa carries a disease called Marfan syndrome and has never been diagnosed before.

After presenting a slightly more stable clinical condition, the doctors began to prepare her for a hospital transfer because she would have to undergo an emergency cardiac surgery, as her aorta was dilating and could burst. The surgery was performed at the same night at Saint Michael's Hospital. The doctors were very clear to the risks that she would go through during the surgery, but if she did not have the surgery she could die in 3 days because her condition was very serious.

After a long night of distress and waiting for good news, the next morning the doctor reported that the surgery had been completed, but they had spent several hours struggling to save her life, as she had 3 cardiac arrests and a very strong reaction to a drug that almost caused her death. In addition to all the complications, she continued to lose a lot of blood and her heart rate was very low. The doctor was very concerned and said that the entire medical team was doing everything possible to keep her alive. An hour later, the doctor came back and reassured the family and friends that her condition was stabilizing and that within 20 minutes she would be taken out of the surgery room, but that she wasn't nevertheless out of danger and that she would have to stay in the ICU indefinitely. All the medical staff said at all times that it was really a miracle that she had survived because her condition was very serious and the surgery was very delicate.

Today, July 14th we received the information that she continues to recover well from her surgery, although she still needs to be connected to breathing supporting machines. Now we are waiting for her recovery, although doctors said that it will be slow and may take some time.
Her family can not afford all hospital and surgical expenses, they have been living in Canada for only two years and have no health insurance. Anyone who has gone through something similar or knows someone who has been through such a difficult situation knows, how expensive it is, especially for those who do not have OHIP coverage or health insurance. Therefore, as her friends, we have decided to get together to help them raise funds to pay for some of the hospital expenses. We would highly appreciate your support with any amount, the family will be extremely grateful.

Nossa amiga, Vanessa Flamini 28 anos, casada e com uma filha de 6 anos de idade, tem vivido momentos difíceis nestes últimos dias. Na terca feira dia 11 de julho de 2017 por volta de 3pm, Vanessa estava em casa com a sua filha quando de repente começou a sentir fortes dores no peito, de imediato sua filha Julia ligou para o pai pedindo ajuda, o mesmo que naquele momento estava trabalhando em uma cidade distante de Toronto, ligou para duas amigas que estavam próximas que foram imediatamente para a sua casa socorrer sua esposa.

Chegando lá encontraram-na no chão se contorcendo-se com muitas dores e dificuldades para respirar, ao ve-la naquele estado, logo ligaram para os paramédicos que de prontidão vieram ao socorro, depois de 40 minutos de atendimento ali no local eles a levaram para o hospital mais próximo (Humber River), onde ela permaneceu por mais de 4 horas fazendo vários exames e controlando a pressão sanguínea e os batimentos cardíacos. Depois de muitos exames, foi descoberto que Vanessa sofre de uma doença chamada síndrome de marfam, nunca antes diagnosticada.

Depois de apresentar um quadro um pouco mais estável, os médicos começaram a prepara-la para uma transferência de hospital e nos informaram que ela teria que passar por uma cirurgia cardíaca de emergência, pois a sua aorta estava se dilatando e podia romper os vasos sanguíneos. Esta cirurgia foi feita no hospital Saint Michael’s naquela mesma noite. Os médicos foram bastante claros aos riscos que ela correria durante a cirurgia, mas caso não a fizesse poderia vir a óbito em 3 dias pois o seu estado era muito grave.

Foram horas de angustia e espera, até que pela manha o medico veio dizer que a cirurgia tinha sido concluída, mas que passaram varias horas lutando para salvar a vida dela, pois ela teve 3 paradas cardíacas e uma reação muito forte a um medicamento que quase a levou a óbito. Além de todas as complicações, ela continuava a perder muito sangue e os seus batimentos cardíacos estavam muito baixos. O medico demonstrou estar muito preocupado e disse que toda a equipe medica estava fazendo o possível para mantê-la viva. Uma hora depois, o medico voltou e nos tranquilizou dizendo que seu quadro estava se estabilizando e que dentro de 20 minutos a tirariam da sala de cirurgia, mas que ainda assim ela não estava fora de perigo e que iria ficar na UTI por tempo indeterminado. Toda a equipe médica dizia a todo tempo que foi realmente um milagre ela estar ali e ter sobrevivido, pois seu estado era gravíssimo e a cirurgia foi muito delicada.

Hoje dia 14 de julho tivemos informações de que ela continua em progresso em sua recuperação e que não esta mais sob efeito de medicamentos para manter os batimentos cardíacos normais e a sua pressão. Ela ainda continua entubada, mas passa bem na medida do possível, agora estamos aguardando pela sua recuperação que como já dito pelos médicos será lenta, e que levara algum tempo. A família dela não tem condições de arcar com todas as despesas hospitalares e cirúrgica, eles vivem aqui há apenas dois anos e não possuem nenhum plano de saúde. Quem já passou ou conhece alguém que já tenha passado por isso sabe, o quanto é caro tudo isso, principalmente para quem nao tem OHIP ou seguro saúde. Entao nós amigos, resolvemos nos unir em prol de ajuda-los a arrecadar fundos para pagar as despesas. Pedimos encarecidamente a quem puder nos ajudar com qualquer quantia, seremos muitos gratos.
