"Our Story"
The River Arts District, next to Foundation was at one point an integral part of the Asheville art scene because of its affordable studios - "The Tannery" was a shared studio space that served as the creative base for many local artists, the energy that surrounded these studios was one of freedom and community - "There was a loose energy about it, I got looser that I ever have. I think that’s why a closing of a place like this matters." - Jameid Ferrin

These buildings that held the studios didnt actually have a 'Certificate of Occupancy' and thus, the artists were evicted on July 11th, 2014.

Since the new year, we have identified an unprecedented need for affordable studios, artists are trying to come together in these confusing times and we have been building on the promise of a space. Now, we can finally say that we have a location, and in the best possible area, the burgeoning River Arts District.
"Why we need you."
- The goal of this Gofundme is to help us offset some costs for The Tannery space, where we plan to have a maximum of 20 affordable shared studios.
Imagine a huge warehouse filled with various different artists studios, theres a photo studio setup, a painters studio, sculptural furniture, murals span across the interior, music is playing while a group of friends are talking in a lounge area, theres going to be a public life event later. This space is important if our generation wants to make change in the world, its time for us to come together and take this online community into the real world.
"Heres the RAD space were looking at,
(To be fixed up)
"Why this matters."
- To share with you the tone of this endeavor, here is a quote from Thomas Wolfe...
"Along our streets and town, the ownership of land is constantly changing. A spirit of waste and destructiveness is everywhere. The best places in town are being mutilated. ... And they're putting up a new hotel. It will be 16 stories of steel and concrete and pressed brick, stamped out of the same mold as if by some gigantic biscuit cutter of hotels that has produced a thousand others like it all over the country."
This has been the opinion in Asheville for almost a hundred years, that everything's moving too fast for us. It is not a new issue and there is always a "push and pull" in situations like these.
With our online cultural capital we already have the opportunity to create a real world movement, and to have a space is to play with what is possible. - we plan to do ongoing video blogs, host events, and essentially focus our complete effort on creating an awesome space to come together and have fun while empowering artists to develop their careers. <3
