Apollo Middle School Track & Field

Before beginning with our story, my fellow coaches and I would like to commence this fundraiser by saying thank you. Thank you for taking the time to read this entry and supporting us in this endeavor. We truly appreciate your time and kindness from the bottom of our hearts.
In order to have profound success, a team must embody five important qualities: love, respect, discipline, character and humility. After a successful year of workouts, training and conditioning, the track & field athletes at Apollo Middle School (AMS) adopted the following mantra: “We are one.” AMS represents a diverse, low-income community of individuals who rightfully believe that an education is the key to success. If there is one lesson I have learned over the course of my life, it is that sports can serve as a mechanism to teach students about academic excellence, morality, discipline and community. When many of my students first entered my classroom, they stated that “they would never be able to leave Antioch because of the hardships their families face daily.” Over the course of the year, they have come to understand that a zip code should not dictate the academic and athletic success an individual can achieve in his or her life. If you want something, stand up, work hard, go out there and get it. Last year, these athletes did just that. They transcended and despite numerous obstacles, were crowned as the 4th best team in the city of Nashville.
Many of these students understand that hard work equals success. My fellow coaches and I aspire to preach the fundamental idea that what happens in the classroom translates directly to what happens on the track and field and in the real world. Our team maintains that students maintain an A/B average in order to maintain active status on the team. Our team also maintains that In School Suspension or Out of School Suspension will automatically result in the dismissal from the team. Every single one of our athletes will uphold their commitment to our norms. In all, we believe in order, discipline and leadership.
Despite our ambitions for success, we face significant financial obstacles that have been rather difficult to overcome. AMS functions as a Title I school due to the high financial needs of its students, families and communities. AMS serves one of the most diverse student bodies in Davidson County, where approximately 85% of students receive free or reduced lunch. Because funds are rightfully allocated to educational purposes at Apollo, students and coaches receive the unique opportunity to look for alternative methods to achieve the personal goals we set for ourselves.
We believe that these student athletes deserve something to be proud of. Their diligent work ethic, heart, charisma and love for one another should not go unnoticed. We lack the necessary equipment to arm our athletes with in preparation for this season. We plan to use your contributions to buy hurdles, jerseys, batons and starting blocks. Without you, we will be unable to give these students the opportunity to efficiently and effectively showcase their talent. Most importantly, we will have failed them in illustrating that their efforts in the classroom have been substantial and for good reason.
John F. Kennedy once famously stated, “a rising tide raises all boats.” Through your generosity and kindness, we hope to overcome these challenges to show our students and athletes that hard work, love and respect will always prevail over failure, struggle and hardship. Whenever we step out on that track, we see smiles. We see heart. We see potential. We see our athletes as our very own because of the sole fact that we are one.
We truly thank you for reading our entry. Any amount will be the difference for our student athletes. We ask that you please share this page to your friends and family through social media in order to spread the word because Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM)
