Platform 4 Palestinian Arts Project

Donation protected
Myself, Hafsah Aneela Bashir (writer and poet) and Nikki Mailer (community theatre practitioner) want to help push Palestinian theatre onto the world stage and we need your help to do it! We want to actively contribute towards the complexity and richness the arts has to offer. The inspiration for this project was initially inspired by a new anthology,  recently  produced, called ‘Inside/Outside: Six Plays from Palestine and the Diaspora’.

It is becoming more apparent in the media than ever that inequality and lack of diversity is still a problem whereby BAME artists are not getting the recognition that they deserve. We want to help create change.

This project will explore culturally relevant plays and poetry from Palestine and the diaspora through master-classes with different artists. We want to bring Palestinian playwrights and spoken word artists to Manchester to create productive dialogue through the narrating and sharing of their own stories, histories and visions of the future. This will also provide opportunities for local BAME writers or theatre makers to develop as artists. We have made connections with different Palestinian playwrights as well as local artists who will be contributing to this project such as Ahmed Masoud - a London based writer and playwright who has said, "I would like Palestinian theatre to reach a wider audience, to connect with new people who will add to the quality of the work, to show the uniqueness of Palestinian culture and art scene."

We also want to use this opportunity to bring a production by Ahmed Masoud to not only deliver a master-class but also stage his play called ‘Shroud Maker,’ a black comedy of Gaza which has been performed in London.

We want to provide a platform  to challenge peoples’ perceptions of Palestinian arts not just within a struggle but as vibrant human beings whose voices should be heard.

Our project is being supported by ‘In Place of War’ http://www.inplaceofwar.net/ who will provide an online digital platform for the project.

Palestinian input and consultation is integral to this type of project so we aim to be as open and as mindful as possible.

In order for us to get this underway we need your help to raise £3000 to help cover the cost of bringing Palestinian writers to Manchester to deliver workshops. Please donate however big or small, so we can meet our objectives.

Finally, please spread the word and we will show our gratitude with love, positive energy and cupcakes not necessarily in that order!
