There was no warning. What started out as a normal day ended in sadness for Steve and his family. He passed away unexpectedly on October 23, 2015. His untimely death has left his family with the burden of unexpected medical and funeral expenses so we are trying to raise at least $10,000.00 to help defray some of these costs.
He leaves behind his wife of 39 years, 3 daughters and sons-in-law, 8 grandchildren and a large extended family. He was a good man and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather. He was a devout Christian who loved his family, his friends and his country. He was a US Navy Veteran.
He was also the Commanding Officer of the USS Columbus, a chapter of Starfleet International, in Columbus, Ohio. Starfleet is the international organization for Star Trek fans and it's goal is to uphold the ideals set forth in Star Trek - embracing diversity and having respect for all people. Supporting charity organizations is a major aspect of this organization and Steve supported this with all his heart and soul and got his whole family involved as well.
The USS Columbus has supported numerous charities such as the Mid Ohio Food Bank and the American Cancer Society but the one that was near and dearest to Steve was the Firefighters 4 Kids Toy Drive sponsored by the Columbus Ohio firefighters and a local TV station. Christmas is a special time for children but many families who struggle financially don't have the means to buy toys during the holidays. Steve didn't want to see any child go without getting a toy for Christmas. For over 10 years, during the month of November he would spend several afternoons a week in front of a local library, even in the rain and snow, passing out flyers and collecting toys and donations for this cause. He was already planning and making out a schedule with the libary in preparation for this year's toy drive.
Any donations, large or small would be greatly appreciated. Steve and his family have given so much to the community and we're trying to help them get through this very sad and difficult time.
Thank you for your support.
