The Backstory:
I try to maintain a positive attitude, regardless of what’s going on in my life. However, I failed at this feat in 2017, when I was laid off from my job after 26 years with the company. This loss, among other things, weighed on me. I found myself bogged down with heavy feelings of cynicism, abandonment and loneliness. It took a while to come back to myself, but when I did, it was time to figure out what was next. This quest set me on a spiritual path that took me from self-pity to self-renewal.
I came to realize there was purpose in my pain. I had been pushed out of my corporate comfort zone, so I could start the process of reimagining myself. Writing was key to my transformation. It was the vehicle that allowed me to simultaneously travel back in time and glimpse into the future. Writing moved me from thinking about “what was” to dreaming about “what could be”.
At the urging of my husband, I decided to do something with the pile of accumulating paper on my desk. I shared samples of my writings with a few friends. Excited about the responses, I took it a step further, and shared more with some others. My stories of hope and faith resonated with everyone. They were all encouraged by what they read. Over time, I was inspired to write a book to help others see moments of adversity as opportunities for personal growth. So many people suffer in silence, but it would behoove us to share our experiences, because when we do, we discover we are not alone in our struggles.
I documented my layoff journey through a compilation of devotionals. I submitted my manuscript, “The Layover", to two Christian publishing companies. To my delight, I have received approvals from both publishers!
The moral of my story is this: Our bad experiences don’t have to make us bitter, they can make us better. The choice is ours.
