Triathlon fundraising
Donation protected
In a month's time I will be attempting my first novice triathlon. I'm also attempting to raise money towards a special bit of kit, an Upsee, for a special three year old called Zoey.
Zoey's mum Sarah was in my NCT group and we met six years ago when pregnant with our first daughters, Rosie and Anya. They went on to become great friends, as did we. Sarah and her family moved to Australia while she was pregnant with Zoey, so sadly for us (and our NCT group) we never got to know Zoey as well as we would have wished.
Zoey has a-typical Rett Syndrome, which means she has severe seizures, needs a feeding tube to eat and drink, has little purposeful use of her hands and is unable to sit or stand independently. Despite her challenges, she is a happy and active three-year-old girl who enjoys swimming, loves animals, and playing with her older sister. However, it is difficult for Zoey to engage with the world around her because of her need for physical support - always being in a wheelchair or standing frame means she can't interact with the things around her, because she quite simply can't reach them. An Upsee will make a huge improvement in Zoey's quality life, as it will get her standing, walking and exploring the world around her. For the first time in her life, she will be able to dance, look in the kitchen cupboards, and walk while holding her sister's hand.
All families in Sarah's position face the constant financial pressure of trying to provide the right kit and equipment suitable for their child's special needs. It's a horridly expensive business, especially so when that child is a fast growing little girl!
Thank you for helping to make this happen by donating to raise money for Zoey's Upsee. (Incidently, any money raised over the £300 will go towards Rett Syndrome research).
This video says a little about what it feels like to be a girl with Rett Syndrome - http://vimeo.com/91984018
And this explains what the Upsee actually is and how children use it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahXQLhjHFJI
