Anaiwan Language Revival Program

Nyanga ntaka wangan? What brings you here?

In April 2016, a group of Anaiwan elders and community members met in Armidale to kickstart UYITIKA (let’s speak), the Anaiwan Language Revival Program. Our language hasn’t been spoken for decades, so we’ve been spending a lot of time digging through library and university archives for historical records, some of which date back to the 1800s. From these records, we’re working to reconstruct our ancient tongue to the fullest extent possible.

This will mean producing the first Anaiwan dictionary and grammar, the foundation from which we can launch a strong community based language revival effort. We’re launching this crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds needed for an operational budget, including the design, publishing and printing of the Anaiwan dictionary/grammar. Our aim is to raise $30,000. This grassroots project, driven by Anaiwan people on all fronts, is an act of self-determination and reclamation. These funds will assist greatly in the effort to breathe new life into our traditional language.

Nyaka uyila lanapura. We will speak soon.
