Angel's Education Fund

Donation protected
At age 15, Angel Carroll found herself forced into the foster care system. In one year, she moved from placement to placement 12 times. Moving around so frequently affected her education tremendously. in fact, by her third year in high school, she was still a freshman.

After continuously being told she would amount to nothing and should drop out of school, Angel decided she was not going to be a statistic and forgotten about. Within four months, through credit by exam, Angel had enough high school credits to do the unthinkable---she graduated from New Braunfels High School in New Braunfels, Texas. It was December 2012 and Angel's life was just beginning.

After spending a few years in Austin working and going to school, Angel transferred to Texas Tech University, where she is currently pursuing a B.A. in Social Work with a minor in English. Angel is active on campus as the President of the Social Work Student Organization and the National Association of Social Workers.  She is also a proud member of Sigma Phi Lambda, a Christian sorority.  In addition to her multiple on-campus activities, Angel is also working with Austin Children’s Shelter to create a foster care alumni center in Austin, Texas that would extend services to those who have aged out of care.

Angel is expected to graduate from Texas Tech University in 2018, followed by pursuit of a Master’s degree in Social Work Policy.

Her dream is not only to work alongside state and Federal legislators to effectuate positive change in public policy related to the foster care system, but also to inspire those still within the system to become more than a statistic. She wants to be an example to those who have aged out of care that it is never too late to go back to school. It is never too late to make dreams come true.

Angel is blessed to have a tuition fee waiver that covers the cost of undergraduate coursework. It does not, however, cover the entire cost of attending Texas Tech. After the Spring 2017 semester, her final bill for the 2016-2017 school year will be $10,584. This includes room and board, textbooks, and supplies. She received a grant of $4,094, but was left with no choice but to take out a subsidized and unsubsidized loan of $6,490 to cover the remaining costs. With the expected graduation date of December 2018, her final bill is projected to total $26,460.

Needless to say, tuition is costly, even with grants. While Angel is extraordinarily grateful that she receives a scholarship that helps cover the cost of her classes, she must still work full- and part-time jobs to help cover the costs of university fees, textbooks, supplies, and other expenses---all while attending college full-time and maintaining a laudable grade point average.

Angel’s story shows that with hard work and determination, you can get through anything. The money donated to this GoFundMe will help offset her educational costs while she completes her undergraduate degree. All monies collected over this amount will be held in an account to help Angel pay for her graduate level education. With your donation, you will be giving the gift of education to a young woman whose biggest dream is to help kids within the foster care system and show them that they, too, can be more than just a statistic.
