Brewce Martin's Real Legacy

Donation protected
I have a unique story regarding a friend of mine who has endured 16 years of abuse and control from a man named Brewce Martin. The story is amazing. I can only scratch the surface here, but listen up. My name is Ben Story IV and I am from Dayton, Oh. I met Halo at a skatepark around 15 years ago. We re-connected through social media this year. I went to visit her and she was very timid when talking about her personal life. She even asked me “if Brewce sent me” to meet her. I later learned why she was so paranoid. He had sent skateboarders to befriend her before only to learn they were not real friends but were assisting him to stalk her.

Brewce Martin is a 51 year old cult-style leader who owns an anarchist skateboard park called "Skatopia". There was a documentary on Netflix called "Skatopia - 88 Acres of Anarchy" which gave us viewers a small glimpse of this man's constant erratic behavior and abuse of what he calls his "minions" and "cultees".

At age 35 Brewce began dating a vibrant young girl who went by the name of "Halo". She was 17 years old. He told her he was in his twenties and, as she says, "Skaters look young, I was starstuck because he had been on ESPN and MTV. I was young and stupid, but I have my daughter and she's amazing so I have no regrets".

Halo gave birth to his child at age 20. He was not present because she left him when she was about 4 months pregnant after he kicked her in the stomach and threw her down a flight of stairs. Halo walked in on him in bed with another woman and he attacked her. "I was pregnant. He was hurting more than just me. That's what it took for me to finally get out and realize and go to college and try to move on", Halo stated when asked what the breaking point for sustaining abuse was. As shared in the documentary, he later went to jail for beating that other woman's boyfriend, Eric, in the head with a baseball bat when Eric discovered the affair in Parkersburg, WV.  Eric still has not regained full speech control.

Because of the lack of her father's presence as a child, Halo still allowed Brewce to see his daughter every other weekend since she was 2 years old. "Just because I don't want a relationship with him doesnt mean he should never see his daughter" was her philosophy. She also made it a point to never speak negatively about him to their daughter. I commend her for this mature perspective. Many parents could learn from her immaculate style of parenting. She has driven over an hour one way to sustain this relationship every other weekend for 11 years. She did this even though she never received any amount of child support or medical assistance for their daughter. She has maintained the relationship between Brewce and his daughter through death threats, beatings, emotional and psychological abuse. The last physical attack was when he spit on her and slammed her to the sidewalk in front of the courthouse after a custody hearing in which she won complete custody. He was jailed for the attack.
Every time she took her daughter for visitation she feared for an altercation. The doctor prescribed her anti-anxiety meds but she did not feel comfortable taking them so she learned breathing techniques to calm herself on the drive. At least 5 people have restraining orders on the man to this day. There has been at least one of his past lovers that did not survive. He was never convicted of murder. But those who know - know.

Brewce sustained a life-threatening injury several years ago and everyone, including Halo and his girlfriend at the time Amber, hoped it would open his eyes to a new reality. He was awarded social security disability and Halo began receiving a mere $68/month from SSI for the care of their child. But, she was glad to finally get something. "Hey, I never received a dime. This pays the water and garbage bills and that helps". My google maps research reveals that she pays more than $68 for gas and tolls monthly to maintain their relationship.

Halo would cry for 48 hours straight while her daughter was at Skatopia every other weekend. She quit skateboarding for over 5 years because of the mental abuse and Brewce convincing her that "the skateboard world was his". His minions would threaten her at public parks and he would always seem to know where she was if she went to skate while their daughter was on a visit. He would send messages that she was being watched stating he "owned the world of underground skating." Halo eventually became paranoid that his threats were not empty and, at one point, had equipped all of her doors and windows with bells and would stay home while their daughter was a Skatopia. "Looking back, I wasn't crazy. The threats are still there, I just want to live free and I finally got tired of feeling like a prisoner. I just had to learn to ignore him. I am a leader, not a follower. I just had to accept my existence and try to move forward."

Halo finished college and is now employed by her local school district as a substitute until a full time position opens up. "Some days are harder than others, especially after a restless night of flashbacks and nightmares, but I do my best". She is a youth basketball coach and started a small company that teaches children to skateboard. "I volunteer coaching both sports to stay productive" she says, adding that both activities are volunteer positions and things she is able to do with her daughter by her side.

Unfortunately, since his accident, Brewce has only become more violent. He has constant run-ins with law enforcement and has gone over the edge this time. Their daughter is now 13 years old. It is discouraging to see what her and Halo are going through. Brewce is currently awaiting trial for felonious vehicular assault and has been incarcerated off and on several times this year for various assault charges and posession of drugs. He has missed visitations because of being jailed and, sadly, the time has come that this lovely 13 year old girl is learning who her father truly is. There have been times lately she begged not to go, but the visitation was court ordered. (Yes, that is correct. The self-proclaimed anarchist took Halo to court instead of agreeing on dates and times themselves and now lives on SSI.) However, because of this latest felony charge and the fact that he has pled "not guilty by reason of insanity" visitation has been suspended until after his psych evaluation and trial.

The history of drug use and the physical and sexual abuse of young women and men runs deep at Skatopia. Halo knows and understands firsthand the threats young girls face at Skatopia unsupervised. As their daughter turns in to a teenager the concerns, she says, "are all too real". The suspension of visitation could not have came at a better time for the family. Halo and her daughter have already sacrificed so much. The teen gave up a possible starting position on her basketball team because Brewce would not work with her game schedule. She has to miss school because of scheduling healthcare appointments that could be held on Friday afternoons. Halo would have never kept her daughter away completely but the court arranged schedule made the flexibility of having a productive family difficult.

Halo has watched as people donate thousands of dollars to get this man to get out of jail countless times while she sometimes struggled to buy Christmas and birthday presents for her daughter as a single mother.
She has watched as thousands of dollars are being donated to Skatopia, untaxed and untrackable to the Child Support Agency, to pour concete while she struggled to finish college and pay the bills. Living on state assistance and attending therapy regularly, she has managed to raise a talented straight-A student and smart young lady. "Because of the things she is exposed to every other weekend I have had to educate her on subjects I didnt think we would have to talk about until years later" Halo says as she shakes her head and it hangs low. Her eyes go sad. "You know", she says, "I have never been offered any money by Brewce to help with our daughter. He would not even pitch in on school picture or basketball uniform costs. I asked a few times, but pouring concrete seems more important because I was always denied. He would come over to visit, pay no attention to our daughter, and harrass me the whole time. When I got tired of it I just handed him a grocery bag and he would raid my cabinents and leave. Also, I used to think of skate boarders as family, but as I secluded myself from the scene I lost many of that family. It's unfortunate because I miss like-minded adult company."

If you have ever donated money that went to Skatopia to support a grown man to pay his bills and pour concrete please consider matching that donation to this Go Fund Me for Brewce's daughter. "It's been 16 years under his wing. I finally feel free" Halo told me today as she was going to file for an updated restraining order. She is getting threats from him because she has been court ordered to suspend visitation until after his felony trial and she will not violate the order. He texted her "paybacks going to hurt". She is not the one who deemed him insane, he did that himself. Witnessing this constant harrassment firsthand inspired me to set up this page. His daughter stated "there are consequences for actions and everyone needs to learn that" in regards to visitation being suspended. Both her and Halo are happy to be relieved of the burden of every other weekend travel. However, their new journey has just begun.

They have to open an investigation. The threats have started all over. "The bells won't go up again", says Halo, "this time I am going to get a lawyer and stand up to him for every woman he has ever sexually abused. This time I will stand up for every man he has ever punched or kicked. I will help his current victim in the felonious assault charge in any way I can. Countless people, including myself, have waited to take him this far in the court system only to be manipulated in to dropping the charges last minute. This time justice will prevail". She states that their daughter should be heard by the court as well for some of her negative experiences while with her father and she just wants to be able to hire help to assist the victims this time.

Their daughter has been diagnosed with scoliosis and TMJ after falling out of a tree at Skatopia and the visitation schedule has affected her getting treated regularly until now. "Now we can get her feeling better and move on slowly but surely. It's going to be a long journey".

When asked if I could create a GoFundMe account to help she said "This case is huge and we need support. That sounds wonderful, as long as my daughter remains low key and safe."

If you would like to assist Halo in the investigation to hold this man accountable for his negative actions against her and others over the last 30 years or help getting their daughter back and forth to her physical therapy and dentist appointments - please donate.  She is the sole beneficiary of this campaign. She asks that you contact her directly via email with any questions at [email redacted] and  leave her daughter out of the mix. The money will first go to the investigation. Witnesses have to be subpoened. Travel costs and lodging for the witnesses and victims will need to be paid. Fees to obtain documents from courts will need to be paid. If there are funds left they will go to the travel expenses for her daughters medical treatments. Halo hopes to raise enough money to cover these expenses and be able to make a donation to My Sister's Place - a shelter in her college town of Athens, Ohio that assists victims of domestic violence.

Brewce has been arrested in several states for battery  in the last decade. He also has a current warrant for assaulting a police officer in the Parish of New Orleans.

Halo is compiling all of the supporting documents for this story to be made public after the trial.
