Restore the Broadway Popcorn Cart

Broadway Popcorn Cart
Do you remember sneaking popcorn into a movie at the old Metropolitan Theatre on Broad St? Or begging your parents for a 5¢ snack on Scarth St? If you do then you remember the Broadway Popcorn Wagon!

A “Popping” Good Story
One of the most unique pieces in the Civic Museum of Regina’s collection is the Broadway Popcorn Wagon. The handmade cart was purchased by John Alecxe in 1929. Alexce’s son Harry operated the cart at the corner of Lorne St and Victoria Ave, and would roll the cart out to holiday events and fairs. In the 1940’s the Broadway Popcorn Wagon supplied the Metropolitan, Broadway, and Capitol Theatres with popcorn for hungry movie-goers. The cart continued to operate at various locations throughout the city of Regina, all the way up until 1992.

A Community Project!
We want to restore the Broadway Popcorn Wagon! And we can’t do it without YOU!

Working Plan
Popcorn? Yes please! History? We’ve got it covered! Budget? That’s where YOU come in...

We need help in getting the popcorn cart up and running again. The cart needs to be refitted with a modern popcorn popper before we’re ready to turn the cart into a tiny, mobile museum!
Design by Betta Shum

The money raised for this GoFundMe campaign will go directly to purchasing the necessary parts to make the popcorn cart operational. Anything we make over our goal will be used to pay for the rest of the project—painting, creating our display, maintenance and other operational costs. Our goal is to have the cart ready to roll out and pop up some corn by 2019.

Community Reach?
We estimate that between 60,000 to 100,000 people will experience the “pop-up” museum in the course of a year. This will create jobs for local students over the summer, as popcorn artists and museum interpreters. Not only will our popcorn cart bring a sense of fun to the cityscape while it functions as an interpreted museum space. A meeting place that bridges gaps and starts conversations.  After all, who doesn’t love popcorn?
