CFBU Brock Radio Emergency Alert

Hello. We are an enthusiastic group of volunteers from the community-based campus radio station in St. Catharines, Ontario. We are students, alumni, and community members and we love our station!
We are grateful that we can provide an alternative to mainstream media and a platform for diverse voices from our community. We support independent music and believe in helping upcoming artists as much as we can.

Our government recently passed a law requiring all radio stations to participate in the National Public Alerting System. The alert system allows officials to immediately warn the public of threats to life or property -- forest fires, tornadoes, floods, environmental disasters and more. The system also broadcasts Amber Alerts.

We are happy to help our community by installing an Emergency Alert System. While we are grateful to be part of this important project, the equipment for the system is expensive. We are a small station with a big heart, but a tiny budget. We simply can’t afford this type of purchase. In fact, we’d been hoping to save for some upgrades and remote broadcast equipment, so that our volunteers can get out into the community to tell the stories of the people in our neighbourhoods.

While $10,000 in upgrades may not seem like a huge expense to some, for us the ripple effect of the new requirement will impact our operational budget. That’s why we’ve turned to the GoFund community to ask for your help.

We’re proud of the work we do. As a community radio station we offer an autonomous media source for news and information, free from government and corporate influence. For our volunteers, we offer training at a working radio station, which operates 24/7.

We provide a safe and nurturing environment where volunteers can express their creativity without the outside influences that exist in commercial radio.
