Chambersburg Community Murals

Downtown Chambersburg Inc. (DCI) , an affiliate of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce that focuses on downtown revitalization, is partnering with local public art enthusiasts to bring Isaiah Zagar to Chambersburg this summer. Zagar, a renowned Philadelphia-based mosaic-mural artist, will work with community volunteers to install two large-scale murals on Main Street.
Holly Baker Strayer, an art teacher at Chambersburg Area Senior High School, has been teaching her art students about Zagar’s work for years. Inspired by his work and how it’s transformed Philadelphia neighborhoods, she asked him if he would come to Chambersburg to do a mural and he said yes. Strayer has partnered with DCI to bring Zagar to Chambersburg to help brighten up the downtown with his art. “As an artist, I feel that Isaiah’s work is a fun and creative way to bring art to the downtown area. Art inspires and builds community,” said Baker Strayer.
The two project sites are the Main Street Deli building, located at 33 N. Main Street; and The Foundry building, at 100 S. Main Street. The mural on the Main Street Deli building will be approximately 68 feet wide by 15 feet high and the mural on The Foundry building will be approximately 37 feet wide by 15 feet high.
DCI is launching a fundraising campaign to raise $20,000 to pay for the murals. Patriot Federal Credit Union is providing a $5,000 community challenge grant for the gofundme campaign. For every dollar donated on the gofundme website, Patriot will match it dollar for dollar up to $5,000.
Public art has been used to help revitalize downtowns and to improve the look and feel of downtowns. DCI has been working to expand its existing downtown mural project, a temporary mural exhibit that features 80+ murals, to include permanent murals. DCI hopes that the Zagar mural project will be the catalyst for an ongoing permanent mural project in the downtown.
