Teach High School in South Africa

WHO AM I ?
My name is Dr. Wanda Evans-Brewer and I have been teaching for over 20 years. I hold a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a PhD in Education. I am also living in poverty.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME ?
Unfortunately, the corporate model of higher education is pushing professors like myself into poverty and this model is a disaster.
More than half of college faculty are adjunct – or part-time - professors.
College tuition is rising at twice the rate of inflation. By hiring more adjuncts and less tenure track professors, colleges and universities are diminishing the quality of education for students and professors.
Adjunct professors have limited access to resources like technology, office space, resources and they receive no benefits.
1 in 4 part-time faculty receive public assistance
31% if part-time faculty live near or below the poverty line
$22,500 is the average salary of adjunct professors
60% of part-time professors have additional jobs
Any professor living in poverty is unacceptable – especially when you consider the rising cost of tuition and the amount of money colleges and universities are taking in.
HOW YOU CAN HELP ME ?
Currently, I am an adjunct professor for Concordia University Chicago and they have connected me with a school (www.thembatrust.org) in South Africa.
The Themba Trust is a registered, independent educational non-profit organization in South Africa. This organization focuses on offering quality education in a safe learning environment for high school students who live in deep, rural and disadvantaged communities.
This amazing opportunity has presented itself and I am eager to continue my heartfelt passion for teaching abroad. This trip would be life changing for me and my daughter and would allow my love for teaching to be recharged.
This would also of course drastically improve my financial circumstances. As the cost of living is 85% cheaper in South Africa compared to Chicago.
I am scheduled to begin teaching in the Summer of 2016, which is quickly approaching. I have saved enough money to get me to South Africa, however, I need help with purchasing a ticket for my five year old daughter who will be travelling with me.
Your donation will make a postive impact on not only my life but the life of my daughter as well. No donation is too big or too small. Every contribution counts in helping me to reach my goal.
Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to read my story and consider donating to my cause for education. Please share my story with your loved ones and pray for me and my daughter as I continue my fundraising endeavors to help me embrace this new part of my journey. Please feel free to ask me any questions that you may have. You may also learn more about me on my website www.drwandaevans-brewer.com
Many blessings to you,
