Disabled Veteran Needs Help

Who We Are

My name is Karen and I’m putting this out there for my husband, Scott. He is a disabled Navy Veteran with PTSD, Major Depression and a host of other health conditions both physical and neurologic.

Long trips to receive treatments and his physical limitations have left us with an urgent need of transportation that allows him room and the ability to rest. We have found that an RV meets these requirement.

What We are Raising Money For

We live on a fixed income of his disability money so that I can take care of him. We have researched RVs that would work the best for us. While a Class-B is the smallest RV option, they tend to be more expensive because they are more rare on the market. Class-As are the largest which would give him more room, but they can be more expensive and require more space to park. Travel Trailers and 5th Wheels are out because we don’t have a vehicle that could pull it.

The Class-C is the best option for us. It is small enough that we could park in most available space. Yet, it is big enough to for our needs. We are looking at older RVs that don’t have slides, so we have less to worry about and they are typically in the 10k range.

How The Money Will Be Used

The first thing the money will go toward would be for the RV itself.

Once we raise enough money for it, then additional monies will go to make any repairs that might be needed.

Then, monies over that would go toward making the RV more self-sufficient with Solar Panels, LED lights, and other upgrades that would allow us to ‘boondock’ if it is needed.

How Soon Do We Need The Funds

While we don’t have a “deadline”, the sooner we can get this the better. Winter is the best time to buy an RV because the prices are the lowest. We would also like this as soon as possible because his doctors are recommending some treatments that would require him to be out of town/state and if we had the RV it would be more of an option that we could follow-thru with their recommendations.

His doctors are also recommending that he get a service dog. The program that our local VA uses is www.dogs4warriors.org/ During this training time, the veteran needs to be available for the training so the dog acclimates to the veteran and the training center is out of state and requires several weeks.

Why This Means So Much To Us

The health conditions that my husband suffers from run the gambit. He suffers from conditions like diabetes, neuropathy, coronary artery disease, orthostatic hypotension, hyperlipidemia,  fibromyalgia, ulnar neuropathy, chronic pain syndrome, sleep apnea, cirrhosis, emphysema, hemorrhagic cystitis, gross hematuria that leads to chronic kidney and urinary tract infections, and neurogenic bladder, hyperthyroidism, gastroesophageal reflux disease. (Okay, I got tired just typing all of that out.)

However, when I describe him, the only thing in above paragraph that I usually use is Veteran, maybe Navy Veteran. He is so much more than disabled or anyone of his diseases/conditions. In fact, I don’t see him that way. He seems to think that being disabled and sick means he is broken and doesn’t deserve, (I don’t want to say love but…) Love.

If I were to describe my husband I would say… He is supportive, loving, funny, crazy, accepting, charismatic, dependable, easygoing, faithful, fascinating, down to earth, friendly, generous, gentle, goodhearted, good-natured, honorable, tenacious, spiritual, jovial, free-spirited, caring, compassionate, the best husband and father anyone could ask for.

When Scott was growing up, him and his parents lived in an RV through the summers. We’ve always talk about traveling, it’s one of the reasons he joined the Navy. When he found himself without a post and being offered an out of the military he took it. So we talk about going to see the Devils Tower in Wyoming, or visiting our friends that moved to Washington, or visiting our son who lives in California after getting out of the Navy himself.

Then all of the health issues happened, and he seems to be collecting new diseases/conditions each year. Now he is dealing with more heart issues that the doctors are trying to figure out what is causing it, and his therapist is now talking about him going to an inpatient treatment center for his PTSD, but it is out of town/state and he can’t leave his mother, or me and the kids that long.

That is where you come in, we are looking for help to get an RV that we can use to go to out of town appointments so he isn’t pushing himself by being on the road for hours on end. We can stop and stay somewhere for the night. Or if he is going to be hospitalized for several days like he was twice in the last year, we can have it at the VA so the kids can be there too, and he can have his support dog at least part of the time.

We Are Eternally Grateful for Helping Us

These donations will go to help a disabled veteran have a better quality of life, allow him to be with his family even when he is hospitalized, or receiving treatment. Helping him will alleviate the stress involved when needing to travel out of town for appointments and will also allow me to feed him a healthier diet rather than living off of fast food while on the road.
