The Blank Canvas: Our Dome
Designed to have every interior wall covered in original frescos, Holy Ascension Orthodox Church (consecrated in 2008) uniquely contributes to Charleston’s renowned architectural treasures. Our welcoming Mt Pleasant SC parish has joyfully embarked on a second phase effort to adorn our church’s dome, windows and pendatives. To date we are grateful to have raised $50,000 - more than half-way to our goal!
Inspired by the sublime ancient monasteries and churches of Russia, Ukraine, Greece, Romania, Serbia, Syria, Georgia and others, this undertaking presents a rare opportunity for you to be part of creating a lasting and meaningful beauty that Orthodox churches are renowned for throughout the world.
Everywhere, their domes are adorned with vibrant variations of an icon known as Christ Pantokrator (meaning “The Almighty” or “Ruler of All.”) In contrast to Gothic Architecture, where God is “way up there,” this ancient image depicts Emmanuel, "God with us,” because God became man for us in Jesus Christ.
The same extraordinarily gifted iconographers who painted our Apse (below) will travel from Moscow and San Francisco to reprise their devout work; scheduled for completion in Spring 2016.
We are blessed to witness this arduous traditional liturgical task taking place in our midst. Come visit us and see for yourself! We’d be delighted to meet you. And we wholeheartedly welcome you - friends and neighbors, near and far - to join us in this collective and reverential sanctification of space: a peaceful, timeless and heavenly sanctuary in an ever-changing tumultuous world.
Thank you for your generosity and for being a part of living history!
