Eternals #OneOpen Community Fund

We know that the media directly influences what people see and believe — and ultimately how they are treated. It is our responsibility to support authentic, dynamic, and multidimensional portrayals of diverse communities that can create lasting social change.

With those goals in mind, Gold House and CAPE are joining forces to launch One Open — a spin-off of the successful Gold Open movement that seeks to bolster the opening weekend box office for films led by a diverse ensemble of talent and filmmakers. NALIP, RespectAbility, and Color Of Change are among the organizations that have teamed up to amplify this initiative and elevate these diverse communities. One Open’s establishment comes on the heels of Hollywood’s slow progress towards representation within its top films. The latest Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study reported that only 34.3% of all speaking characters in top films were from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups. Even more dire, only 1.4% were LGBTQ and 2.3% were depicted with a disability.

To celebrate some of the most authentically diverse characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), One Open kicks off with the highly-anticipated Marvel Studios’ Eternals — which introduces an incredibly diverse cast including the first deaf MCU superhero (played by Lauren Ridloff). Join the #OneOpen movement by helping to sponsor private open caption screenings of the film for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. We hope everyone will have the opportunity to see themselves represented as heroes on screen without inaccessibility issues!

“There are more than 15 million adults in the U.S. with a hearing disability and enjoying a movie in theatres often has been cumbersome due to less than satisfactory experiences with limited accessibility options in theatres. We hope the expansion of open caption screenings led by the release of Eternals marks the beginning of a more inclusive moviegoing experience for all,” said Delbert Whetter, deaf producer and RespectAbility board vice chair.

Gold Open has previously worked with over 50 API nonprofits, community groups, and schools to fill theaters nationwide, and we look forward to helping more deserving groups celebrate this historic film when we need it most. We most recently worked to coordinate screenings of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for various API nonprofits and community groups nationwide.
