Get Outside, America!

Tax deductible
As Americans, we are losing our connection with nature. We now spend 93% of our lives indoors. Kids in the U.S. spend half as much time outdoors than they did 20 years ago, and now spend more than 53 hours per week in front of a screen or tablet. Research tells us that people who are taking advantage of the outdoors are often older, more affluent, and Caucasian. We need to show how parks can benefit all Americans in order to ensure we do not become the Earth’s first indoor species.

We have the power to reignite the passion our country once had for the outdoors, and we need your help to make it happen.

WHO ARE WE?

We are former environmental staffers from the Obama White House who are eager to change the conversation around the outdoors. We believe the outdoors has the power to bring Americans together and we are using the power of stories to do it.

We are launching Outside I Can,  a new campaign to inspire Americans to get outside and connected to the health and wellness benefits of the outdoors, whether in our national parks, our state beaches or our local playgrounds.

Large and established conservation organizations do a great job but we need to do things differently in order to reach new audiences. We must make the outdoors more personal and accessible again by reaching communities that currently do not see themselves in the outdoors.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Research shows that spending time outside is good for us! The crisp clean air, the vibrant colors of nature, alongside the sounds of birds chirping, wind blowing through the trees, and waves crashing--they all provide critical benefits to our health and well-being. And that is on top of the benefits that come from the exercise associated with spending time walking, hiking, or spending time outside. The research shows us that spending time outdoors not only improves heart health and lung function, but it also helps memory, improves critical thinking, and reduces stress and anxiety.

You don’t have to go to Yellowstone or Yosemite to experience these benefits. They can be found across the country: from local and national parks and forest reserves to scenic trails, lakeshores and beaches.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

In the initial phase, Outside I Can will launch a digital storytelling campaign on the first day of summer (June 21, 2019) highlighting individuals and groups from across the country that have taken advantage of the outdoors to improve their lives. We will amplify the stories through partnerships with businesses and online influencers that will ensure they get the highest possible visibility. Our goal is to inspire Americans nationwide and to demonstrate how the outdoors can be accessible to everyone, no matter where you live or how much money you have.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Your donation will help us reach as many communities as possible by enabling us to take this campaign nationwide. We have designed the campaign to have the broadest possible reach for the least possible cost.  We are very close to reaching our funding target for our June launch.  Note that we have raised a portion of our goal through other fundraising efforts, including from foundations.  With your help, we will close our final funding gap and be ready to explode out of the gate in June. Your contribution will immediately be put to good use and is truly appreciated.

THANK YOU for helping to ensure we never become an indoor species. #OutsideICan
