Gian's Top Surgery!

My name is Gian. I am 22 years old. I live in Bristol, CT. I work full time as a graphic designer. My hobbies include Crossfit and being furry.

I am just like any other guy, except for one detail: I was born female.

I am currently transitioning from female to male, with the use of hormones and surgeries. As you can imagine, these things are not cheap, even with insurance.

I have been on hormones since May 5, 2016 and the next step in my transition is to get surgery on my chest.

The surgeon that I have chosen is Dr. Garramone in Florida. He is simply the best around and the service he provides to trans men all around the world is unbeatable. I have considered going to a surgeon in New England but the results are mediocre at best and if I am going to have this once in a lifetime surgery, I would like it to look good. As far as costs go, these surgeons prices are higher. So by the time I get through with travel and surgery with Dr. G, it would be about the same cost as getting surgery locally.

The reason I am not using insurance is simple: the pre-requisites are simply too much. I have been seeing a therapist since May, and have been on hormones since May. My name has been legally changed since July. However my insurance wants me to also have a year of "real life experience" in my preferred gender role, a year on hormones, and a year in therapy. I simply can not wait to feel more comfortable in my body. Even if I did wait the year to get this covered by insurance, they will not tell me what percentage, if any, of the surgery that will be covered. So I could potentially wait a year to get all the pre-requisites for surgery, only to have the insurance company deny my request and I would have to submit an appeal. It is a lot less time and stress for me to pay out of pocket using credit.

The cost of the surgery itself is $6500. The anesthesia and hospital fees are an additional $1300. Transportation (airfare, renting a car) and hotel for the week that I'll need to stay there will be an additional cost as well.

I will be travelling to Florida by plane with my dear grandmother Bette. She is my biggest support system for my transition, as well as my stepmother and father. During my stay in Florida I will need her to care for me, as my mobility will be extremely limited. She will be able to get me food, assist me in the bathroom, and most importantly drive me to my appointments.
