Hello everyone! My name is Gabriel Gonzalez, and I am currently a rising senior in the Engineering Academy at a Miami-Dade County Public High School.
Ever since 6th grade, I have worked to improve the lives of people battling cancer in my community. I first started by working with my middle school's Relay for Life team, and then transitioned to volunteering with the American Cancer Society to help with their Relay for Life events. I then was invited by one of my teachers to join an organization created by her daughter to raise money for the American Cancer Society. However, I soon noticed that with all of the organizations created to help people with cancer, there was not as much attention being focused on children with cancer and their families. And so, in June of 2016, my organization (Heartening Parents and Children with Cancer) was born.
HPACC's mission is to collect donations in order to create care packages filled with toys, books, and games for children with cancer, and other care packages filled with toiletries and puzzle books for their parents. The goal is to help lighten their moods, and relieve some of the stress and the psychological burden that comes along with battling this dreadful disease.
Since then, I have started item collection drives at both my high school and my middle school, and have collected over 1,800 items. The items were used to create over 300 care packages for pediatric oncology patients and for their parents. Over the last year, I have gathered these items and completed three deliveries; two to Nicklaus Children's Hosptial's Pediatric Oncology ward and one delivery to the Pediatric Oncology Center at the Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Hospital.
I am very happy with the success of my organization, but up until this point, I have been relying solely on items donated to complete the care packages. Although many have been very generous and have donated for this cause, it is not enough to reach my initial goal of helping 1,000 children and their families by the end of my senior year. In order to reach and hopefully surpass this goal, I am requesting donations through this site. The funds collected will be used to purchase the toys, puzzles, books and other items which comprise the care packages. These funds will supplement the donations being received through the generosity of local community members and will allow as many people as possible to contribute and make a difference. Any donation amount, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated and will have a positive impact on children with cancer and their parents. I will be very grateful for any assistance received via gofundme.com and it would give me a great sense of joy and satisfaction to be able to help those affected by cancer.
Together, we can help to make the world a better place by making a difference in people's lives. Thank you very much for all of your help!
Sincerely,
Gabriel Gonzalez
