Turning Blight into Life!

Long time Detroiter, Bianca Danzy, with support from Voices for Earth Justice , wants to take down this burned home to construct a hoop house (an enclosed structure with transparent walls for growing plants) and flower garden! She is raising money to purchase the home, pay the back taxes, and sustainably reconstruct it. Additional funding will go toward construction and materials for the hoop house and garden.
Burned homes and neglected properties plague Detroit. These eyesores are dangerous to peoples' health, often containing exposed, hazardous materials like asbestos, fiber glass, broken glass, and loose building materials. Moreover, these spaces pose as a risk to curious children and threaten the surrounding community as they may invite criminal activity.
These structures must be removed from our neighborhoods and replaced with beautiful and safe spaces. Bianca is in the process of purchasing the burned home pictured above in our neighborhood in northwest Detroit. Your contribution will help Bianca restore this property.
Bianca has been awarded a grant for $2000 to purchase a property to establish a hoop house and garden site. The estimated costs of buying the home, paying the back taxes on it, and reconstructing it are approximately $10,000.
Once the house is removed, she will convert the lot into a hoop house and plant a garden around it. The hoop house will serve to grow native plants and vegetables, which will be shared with neighbors and visitors. It will also extend the gardening season and allow Bianca to cultivate plants that will help us further promote gardening and sustainable agriculture in Detroit.
