Joe Wergeland's Memorial
Donation protected
Joe’s memorial will be held at St. Charles in San Carlos on November 16th at 10am. There will be a reception that follows the service at the church hall. Both the service and reception are open to anyone who wants to pay their respects to joe and support the family.
A heartfelt thank you to all those who have supported our Dad’s journey back to good health. We are overwhelmed and humbled by the amount of support received. Your kind words, donations, and most importantly your prayers, truly gave our father 6 months to fight and be with his family. His Dr.’s were amazed with his progress and hopeful that his heart would heal with time and good care. He was able to come home to us, his four daughters and wife, to regain his strength and start his road to recovery.
Our family is deeply saddened to inform you that he suddenly passed away the weekend of October 15th due to unforeseen complications from his medications. He died peacefully with his loved ones by his side on Sunday evening.
Our Dad was beloved by all who had the privilege to know him. He was a man of faith and love and shared that with everyone he came in contact with. There aren’t enough words to describe how much he impacted our lives and the lives of those around him. He is our protector, our rock, and to say that he will be missed is truly an understatement. He took a piece of our hearts with him but we have comfort knowing we now have the ultimate guardian angel watching over his girls for eternity.
As we mourn the sudden and shocking loss of our dad, husband, brother, uncle and dear friend, it has become apparent that help is needed for his funeral expenses. In lieu of flowers at this distressing time, we ask that you consider donating to help ease the burdens felt by his wife and four daughters.
Thank you all again, for everything. We will update you with funeral service information as soon as we are able.
Best,
Sandra, Jordan, Sara, Holly and Hanna Wergeland

Our dad went into the hospital on April 7th with a fear that something was wrong with his heart. Unfortunately, that was the case. They didn’t realize the severity of the damage to his heart until April 8th when things took a turn for the worse. He was put on full life support and we were told we would lose him. His heart along with his kidneys and liver were failing. Memorial hospital didn’t have the technology to save him, so they life-flighted him to Stanford Hospital on Monday April 10th. As soon as he arrived he went into emergency surgery where the doctors did a quick fix and put in an ECMO/ECLS (Life support for his heart and lungs.) He remains in critical condition in the ICU and now needs a LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device Medical Heart Pump) to save his life. This LVAD device would help pump his weak heart and may be a bridge to a possible heart transplant. The LVAD could give him the time and strength to heal.
This has been a trying time for our family both emotionally and financially. We are asking for support from family, friends and possibly a kind stranger to help us support him. In a perfect world we would only be asking for your thoughts and prayers, but at this time we need more than that. Our medical insurance alone will not cover all these life saving measures. We need financial help to keep our family afloat during this difficult time and to give our father every opportunity to get the best medical care that he needs and deserves. These lifesaving measures are costly, but our Dads life is worth so much more. He has always been our provider and protector, who would do anything to support his wife and four daughters. Now it’s our turn to give him the support and encouragement that he needs and to be there for him like he has for all of us. We want to give him the financial security to take on this new chapter in our lives, so he can focus on getting healthy and nothing else. He is fighting the fight of his life and needs all the support he can get.
Thank you for anyone who took the time to read his story. God Bless you all.

Joe Wergeland was born and raised in San Carlos. He attended St. Charles Catholic School and San Carlos High School. He was raised by his dad Henry, a local San Carlos Fire Fighter, his loving mom Naomi, and later his adored stepmom Shirley. When his father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Joe put his life on hold to care for his father. He was his dad’s rock during those last few months of his life, which comes as no surprise to the ones who know him. He’s our rock and keeps our family grounded and secure. He is happily married to his wife Sandra for 25 years. They have raised four girls who need him in their lives. Along with the son he always wanted, his dog Romeo who depends on him for walks to the park and belly rubs. Any help would be greatly appreciated and our family would be eternally grateful.
