Kaitlin's Debate Camp 2017

Kaitlin Raymond is now in her Junior Year at Rosemont High School in Sacramento, CA. Kaitlin has increased her rankings consistently over the last year, and is using all her experience gained during her Berkeley-Gonzaga Debate Camp last year. Her dream is to pursue a full scholarship to college and continue her study of debate, law and posssibly politics.

Hello, my name is Kaitlin Raymond and I live in Sacramento, California. My school team is part of the Sacramento Urban Debate League (SUDL) and I am participating in Varsity Policy Debate.  I am one of a two-person team, and we compete in at least 6 rounds at each tournament we attend. A round is approximately 90 minutes, with each person speaking twice: One 8 minute speech, and one 5 minute speech with cross exam questions between speakers.

I have been competing in Debate every year since 7th grade. I am currently in my Junior year, so this will be my last summer attending debate camp.

Summer 2015 and 2016: Gonzaga Swing Debate Camp, 3 weeks at UC Berkeley Debate Institute and 3 weeks at Gonzaga Institute in Spokane, WA

Before high school began, I competed in parliamentary debate competitions during my two years at Albert Einstein Middle School.

When I was introduced to debate in seventh grade, I participated in several parliamentary team competitions (including Debate Nationals) as well as individual speaker events. In the third team competition, I won my first medal for achieving 17th place speaker. That medal has always had sentimental value to me and has become a good luck charm. The medal means so much to me because it proves that determination, preparation, passion, and knowledge are what lead to success, and as long as you have the will power, anything is achievable.

During seventh grade at Albert Einstein Middle School, we were a brand new debate team at our school’s first competition. Our debate teams were very inexperienced and we had no professional training until after the second competition of the year. We were thankful to have the support of (not only our dedicated teacher) but also a college debate coach that competed in debate in middle school. Thanks to our coaches and our teacher, we were able to compete respectably. There were even two speaker awards given to our school at the third tournament and we had huge amounts of success in my eyes.

After that competition, I had a new feeling about debate. I realized I had found a passion that I wanted to continue for the rest of my life, and that nothing could stand in my way of achieving success as long as I had the dedication and determination to continue. After competing in even more competitions in eighth grade (achieving greater success not only as individuals but as a school) and now competing in Policy Debate in high school, I realize my life is made complete with debate.

Debate has become my top priority since I discovered that I want to invest my life learning and improving in persuasive strategies, and I am not going to let laziness destroy my future opportunities. I have always worked to the best of my abilities building briefs, practicing speeches, and typing and writing to make the phrasing perfect. I also enjoy searching for evidence/cards and competing with my various partners over the years.

I am so lucky now to be working with one of my closest friends as my partner, and it had been outstanding to work together as we are starting to achieve success. In Novice Policy Debate this year, we have gone to semi-finals together and managed to win 3 rounds out of 3 in our last competition. I will hopefully be working with her for the next two years (as she is a sophomore and I am a freshman). However, next year we hope to be competing in Varsity Policy Debate, which leads to why this gofundme page was created.

I am asking for your monetary support. While our family has all the love and support that I need for success in debate, the advanced skills required for Varsity Policy Debate are only available at debate camps. I have a great opportunity to attend the Gonzaga Debate Institute camp over the summer and while I do receive most of what I need at home, we have to decide between needs and wants. Just like most families when money is involved. Your support will supplement and allow me to advance toward my future career and goals which include debate scholarships for college.

I appreciate any donations, and I am already grateful to have part of the funds for the camp paid for by a scholarship. However, the funds will not afford for the cost of even half the camp tuition, as well as the transportation I will need and other expenses along the way.

Thank you for visiting this page. Any donations are appreciated. If you wish to see one of my recent debate performances, I will be posting links of a speech I performed on Friday, February 20th, 2015 for a SUDL event.
