UPDATE 4/4/2018: Thank you to everyone who has donated thus far!

We continue to raise funds to assist in the long-term recovery of Sector Maná in Barranquitas, PR, through the work of Puerto Rico Stands and local community leaders (see below for more details). Funds will be used to assist in any basic needs identified by community leaders. These include purchasing appliances, furnishing homes, purchasing construction materials to rebuild houses, and helping bring power and running water back to the community.

On September 20, 2017, Hurricane María hit the island of Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm. Almost six months have passed, yet there are many communities still without power, running water and other public health needs. This is the case in Sector Maná, a remote rural community directly hit by the eye of the storm. Not only do they still lack power and running water, but over 20 families lost their homes.

Full recovery will require a collective effort, spanning from federal, state, and local governments; to the private and public sectors; to community organizations and private citizens. That is why Puerto Rico Stands* is spearheading efforts to work with this community to assist long-term recovery efforts through partnerships with local community leaders.

LPHN has joined forces with Puerto Rico Stands to raise funds for Sector Maná. These funds will be used to purchase appliances, furniture, construction materials to rebuild houses, help bring power and running water back to the community, and assist in any other basic needs identified by community leaders.

Puerto Rico will take a long time to rebuild, but if we start small and scale up, anything is possible. Thank you for your assistance during this time.

*Puerto Rico Stands is a Baltimore-based group of Puerto Rican physicians, public health practitioners, engineers and other professionals volunteering their time and talents to improve public health, quality of life and infrastructure in Sector Maná. Specific projects include developing communication technologies that do not require Internet access, linking medical and grassroots organizations in Puerto Rico to communities in need, and providing sustainable ways for community capacity building. Visit their Facebook Page for more information about previous work and future efforts!
