Recently, I've resigned from my position as an After-school teacher for Performing Arts and Social justice in order to take care of my son full-time and also pursue my career as a performance artivist and educator. My goal is to use my performance art as a platform for the empowerment and uplifting of youth and especially young women but I have yet to reach a point where my career as a performance artist is financially stable enough to pursue extraneous endeavors.
Recently, I was invited to join the Miss California pageant that will be happening in January 2016 and think it will be the perfect opportunity to gain the exposure I need to inspire more people to join, support or even pursue their own quests towards positive social change. I realize that I'm not the average girl to participate in an American beauty pageant. I have big curly hair, stretch marks, facial and arm hair and tattoos that would be visible at the pageant. In fact I've never even considered participating in one until I was personally invited. But I truly believe that in participating, I will be able to challenge the standard and idealized norms of beauty as defined by the US society. To me, beauty is love. Love for yourself, love for others and a foundation of love to build your life off of.
My goal is to raise $750 within the next 2-3 weeks so that I can fund my entrance fee, the four different outfits I'll be wearing for the introductory, interview, swimsuit and evening gown segments and employ a hair dresser/make-up artist as well as a pageant coach for some first-timer guidance. If I become Miss California, not only will I have the opportunity to compete in nationals for the Miss United States title but I will also be able to build a network of support in advocating the importance of community, arts, empowerment and dialogue. The $2500 cash prize will be split between my MFA degree program starting in Spring 2016, and the establishment of a community organization that brings the context of our current society to the forefront of dialogue and awarenss through arts, education and entertainmen.
