Let Your Voice Be Heard

I am a social work intern and I am working directly with the Somali Community Self Management Agency of Salt Lake City, Utah. Together, we are wanting to host several workshops in 2016 for naturalized citizens of refugee background. These workshops will provide education and opportunity to these new citizens about the election and voting processes. The goal of these workshops is to educate and empower these communities to let their voices be heard.
The workshops will be held on the last Saturday of each month starting in January 2016. They will continue throughout the year and will end with a final push to encourage and enable the participants to get registered to vote and make it to their polling locations.
The majority of the funding ($4000) that is needed for this project is going directly to the volunteers involved. The volunteers identified are child care providers (to encourage people with young children to participate), drivers (to encourage people with limited transportation to participate) and interpreters (to help people gain a full understanding of the material being presented). The rest of the funding ($500) that is needed will be used to create flyers, handouts, and provide water and snacks to participants on the day of the workshops.
The funding that is received for these series of workshops would benefit the community greatly. It would encourage more civic responsibility and engagement from naturalized citizens that might not understand the process or know how to be involved. Please help these people of refugee background become more invested and engaged in their new citizenship to this country.
